Anyhow, after you bring the landing gear into the toolbar, press that number key to select the landing gear, press it again to switch between grid sizes.
If the landing gear is starting upside down, just use the block rotation keys to get it turned rightside up.
If it keeps trying to snap to the ground, just aim up a bit and try again.
When you have it rightside up, slowly aim down until the landing gear is just above the ground/blocks you are trying to build on.
Hopefully that helps a bit!

No ninja, bad ninja! =P
While I agree it won't 'snap' anymore. (the small landing gear DID use to snap quite nicely to station blocks allowing for hassle free construction) The landing gear will still engage on a station platform.
The key here is 'station' armor blocks, not a large ship or another small ship. Sometimes the game does not 'build a new station' when you want it to - and seems to get 'stuck' building large ship blocks, or classifying it as a large ship when its actually a station. server reboots maybe fix that. Definitely a bug here somewhere.
Drag the landing gear till it just barely turns green above the surface of the station block, and it'll lock. a way to test it is to run into it with your jetpack lightly, if it moves you didn't do it correctly.
EDIT: I don't recommend you anchor to voxels because drilling nearby instantly causes it to .... well try it and see one time. But you might be able to anchor it to voxels if you trust people not to drill nearby.
