In creative mode, you can hold CTRL and drag. this can be done in rows, or along a plane.

I think its ctrl... it may be shift

In the game menu, you can set whether it builds with lines, planes, or individual. I usually put it on line, and then you can just click and drag to build lines, or hold shift to build whole planes up to 2056 blocks at once.

Symmetry is M to turn it on and cycle through the planes, click the ones you want, and then hit M until the grids disappear. N will turn the symmetry on and off without changing grids.

If you have spectator enabled in the settings, f8 is full spectator mode, f9 stays in spectator mode but lets you control your character, f7 is supposed to follow your character in spectator mode but I don't think it really works right now, and f6 reverts you back to your normal character camera.

Remember that all of this requires you be on creative, except for spectator, which can be enabled in survival mode if you want.

Actually it's both.Holding CTRL while dragging the mouse creates a row of blocks, and holding both CTRL and SHIFT while dragging creates flat surface.
