You don't. Welders cannot place blocks.

Is your ship a drone, or does it have a cockpit? If it has a cockpit, and the cockpit block has access to parts through the conveyor system, you can activate cockpit building mode and place blocks like that.

I believe you switch into build mode with H, while inside ships. This should make it just like being out of a ship, but with more inventory space, a constant cockpit GUI, and a lot more weight behind your movement.

Not completely sure on the key. but it's H, or something adjacent to it.

Build mode from cockpit is ctrl+G im fairly sure.

Was thinking it wasn't that because it's too easy to accidentally hit G and open the wrong menu... maybe I rebound it though.

Either way, it'll be in the keybinds.

Does anyone actually use "build from cockpit?" I never like it and struggled to get the angle right to place blocks. It just seemed more natural to exit the cockpit and build normally.

Likewise. I guess I can see the benefit of carrying a huge load of components with you, but making a welding ship with that kind of storage, welding, and enough maneuverability to not drive me nuts is a tall order.

I've only ever found it useful when I limit myself to the "realistic" inventory sizes, and want to make something big, far away from my cargo stores, and afk without risk of oxygen death.

In other words, literally once ever.

I always sort of wanted to set up a welding-construction arm inside of a docking slip; one that could rotate around the ship it was building, extend and retract, and place things, all connected back to the station's main cargo hold. Unfortunately, controls never stopped being too clunky to use it without getting seriously disoriented.

btw is cockpit-buildmode done, yet? (dont think so)

I use cockpit build mode fairly often on planets as it gives me much better loiter time, and I'm going to be up there with my welding ship finishing the job anyway. My biggest complaint about the feature is having to jump out of the cockpit to select new colors because the color palette keybind is overridden by ship functions. Seems like when you're in build mode they'd have the color palette function take priority :/
