How many cargo containers do I need?
Obviously this is not easy to answer, since the answer will vary Wildly,
But it seems like a large ship large cargo container holds WAYYYY more than I'd expect.
How many of these does it take to hold, let's say, your average asteroid at spawn?
Does it compact into a few, or will I need dozens?

Do you have 1x or 10x inventory selected. What's your definition of WAYYYY and what were you expecting?

Let's say X1. Figuring x10 will be easy if we know X1.

So I'm wondering how many cargo containers I'll need if I mine an entire asteroid.
I'm expecting it to take about, 30, but that seems like a Lot

My large mining rig has about 30 large cargo containers. I go to an average asteroid, try to mine just the ore I want, dump the stone on the way back, and I think it would take 4-6 trips to get all the useful ore, not counting the stone.

Then spending several real-world hours refining it all.....

Hmmm. And you use X1?
So I'd need like, 150 per asteroid?

+ more for stone

You will need more than a dozen cargo containers (if at 1x inventory).
I tried to build a ship so big that it could hold all the ore and stone from the asteroid you start on in Lone Survivor.
The ship had 90 large drills and I think about 60 Large containers. Before I was even halfway through the asteroid, all containers and drills were full, so the ore began flying everywhere, which crashed the game. :/

Jesus, it's taken me a good few hours to construct my crappy fighter ship intended to help me take over SPAT ships and even that's still a solid work in progress, it's gonna take me a hell of a long time to build something more suited to harvesting asteroids than my current miner... I've taken over a SPAT kraken ship, maybe I can repurpose that...

If it helps, http://spaceengineerswiki.com lists storage capacity of all blocks.
For example large cargo container: http://spaceengineerswiki.com/Large_Cargo_Container holds 15625L on x1.
Also, one liter of any ore weights 2.7Kg.

Those 15,625 litres is for a Large container on a small grid. A large container on a large grid holds 421,875 litres.

That's why "for example" phrase is there. But thanks for noticing.

So it will take about 150+ per asteroid at x1.
That's a hell of a lot!

I haven't played in a while, but do cargo containers require anything except iron? If I'm gonna be building hundreds of them, I want to make sure I'll have the resources.

Also don't cargo containers require a conveyor attached to them for machinery to draw from them? Players can draw from connected cargo containers, but machines need them touching a conveyor. Yes?
(If I need to make a conveyor system for auto storage amoung hundreds of containers, that's a LOOOOT of idk what resources.
