Control panel search ? When you mean where can you find the control panel of java its here :
https://www.java.com/en/download/help/win_controlpanel.xml
Here is the link
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html
x86 is for 32 bit Os and x64 is for 64 bit OS. Download it, install it. thats all.
I'll give this a try tomorrow, I just spend the last 7 hours trying to get quake running
I updated Java (just to check if it works then), just the same.
So I'm out of this game, especially if I read about needing "programming" in the replies above.
Install it and it run:

If you have another graphics-card in your computer, tell your computer to execute java via GPU only. (In the case of NVidia cards you can do this in the "NVidia Control center")
Adding "javaw.exe" to program list in control center and setting it to 'GPU only' usually fixes it,
This is the 'power saving GPU' that may have issues with full GL support and may cause the shaders to crash on startup.
The game itself looks interesting, I will examine it more thoroughly when I have the time for it.
Library right click starmade / properties /click on top the tab local files and then browse local files/ starmade folder/ there is the logs folder. Zip the complet folder and add it to the support ticket pls.

I already have JRE 8 update 60 installed 64 bit. I installed the Steam Demo of Starmade. On clicking on the 'play' button or double clicking on the Starmade entry in my library Java would instantly crash. "Java(TM) Platform SE binary has stopped working"

So after a bit of reading this forum and other websites concerning Starmade I read about the System Checker Utility and got the following:
Starmade System Checker Report
Thu 09/17/2015
5:53:22.21
RESULTS:
Windows version: Windows 7 64-bit ....PASS
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.2GHz
Memory: 6144MB RAM
Graphics Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 ....PASS
Java version: 64-bit Java 8 ....PASS
So everything passed but the game still doesnt start from the STEAM entry.
I navigated to the install directory and double clicked on the exe: Starmade-starter.exe
AND IT WORKS.
So if you have the correct version of Java installed and it crashing is the first thing you see you might want to start the exe directly.
PS my main Windows profile is on a different drive then my windows install, it matters for Dragon Age: Inquisition unfortunately and thats the ONLY game that seems to care. I mention it because it might matter here too and my work around would not apply too many people.
When you have installed java fresh an restart can help or a steam restart is sometimes the fix too.
On Desktops there is normal not this problem.
Your in 9 month the first one who helps this.
What hardware, OS and what java you have installed ?
Have you something changed int he first launcher ? Memory setting ?
