Faction AI Ship Question...
So ... if I make a AI ship, and assign it to my faction, is there any way that the thing will attack enemy ships?

I made one, and its docked on my station but it just seems to sit there as the enemies (pirates) attack the station, I was thinking they would actually defend the station like the turrents, am I forgetting to do something?

If you attach a bobby AI to a ship and set it to ship mode it should go after nearby hostiles. There is a limited range on it, and it might need some other motivation, like having you open fire on the target first. I dunno, I haven't really played around with it.

Also, is there a reason you keep typing "turrent" instead of turret? >_> I've seen you call them that in like a dozen threads now and I keep getting more and more curious.

Wait, AI ships have been added? When? And how do they work? I have heard about AI controlled turrets but I did not know about this.

me = bad speller, its probably just a memorized typo lol ;)

yeah I've been working on a station base to turn into a template for planets, and I setup a ai ship along with some turrets to kill the 3 pirate ships that seem to keep spawning near me, but even though the turrets are shooting at it, the ship just sits there. you may be right, i may have to hop into a gun a fire as well.

look! I spelt it right! lol ;)

when you add a bobby ai it usually defaults to 'ship' unless you dock it on a turret dock, then its usually set to turret by default. you can toggle it between ship and turret.

How do AI ships behave exactly?

They won't undock on their own, they have to be free floating. You place the bobby ai module, set it to ship and active, and it should attack any enemy that comes close enough.

Sounds interesting. But will the AI actually fly of into space, or is it just a guard ship?

It'll give chase, but stationary until then.

Doesn't this mean your AI ships could just wander away?

It wont "wander" but it will chase after enemies if they flee and never come back. One of the reasons I haven't really played with it yet. It will get better eventually.

So i could have a army of self driven AI ships all over the universe who's sole purpose is to seek out the enemy? *twitch* "We are the borg, you will be assimulated."

So I got them to work, made a series of drone ships (smaller then fighter) and set them out around the spot where i was sitting, along came a group of pirates and all the drone ships scattered, but even though they flew to put distance between them and the pirates, they engaged them and wiped them out rather quickly. I sat back from the safety of the station, watching the battle take place in the distance. little red, blue, and white lasers lighting up the night sky.

once the battle was done, I couldn't see any of my drones any where around, so I flew off looking around, and found that some of them had traveled as far as 2 sectors away from the station, while others were within the same sector as the station still.

so while it works good, they don't exibit any behavor like the random pirate and trade groups you see , rather they scatter in different directions, and spread out. I think they would do better if they would stay clustered like the AI Factions do.

This is the reason I currently show little interest in building AI ships. Until I can give them at least some basic orders like "stay in this system" or "guard this sector" or "fallow me" I won't bother with them.

or even be able to set some 'home point' for them so when they are done fighting they return to within 250-500m of the marked spot. Stay in sector would be helpful for them. that way you could at least keep them confined to one sector, giving up chase if it leaves the sector, or returning to the sector after the battle.
