Cargo transfer
so how does one transfer cargo between docked ships?

On the ship that is doing the docking, connect a Storage Module to a Rail Docker. On the ship or station that is being docked to, connect a Storage Module to a Rail Basic. Transfer is controlled by turning Storage Auto-Pull on/off in the Storage Modules. Turn it OFF in the source Storage, and ON in the destination Storage Module.
The Cargo update video demonstrates starting at 1:59

tnx mate. seeing how it's connected really helps.

Same question here^^

I'm building my 1st drone miner with 6 seperate docking ports for small drones. So is there a way to auto switch the Pull-option, so the drones unload themselves when docking? Doing it manually would be no option because its faster to grap it directly from the mining drone. The only full auto system i've seen on youtube is with cargo containers.

Afaik the current logic goes like this:

Drone -> Salvage comp -> Storage -> cargo -> docker | Station -> rail basic -> Storage -> Cargo

Auto pull ON in the drone to receive the mined material -> for transfer this option has to be unticked on the drone and to be selected in the base storage.

It also looks like the fleet mining command doesnt work for salvagin, just for asteroids or is there a way to drone salvage a derelict/pirate base? In which distance i have to be for mining? Sometimes it feels like i can see the roids but the drones can't so i have to park right in front of one and to move to the next instead of waiting for the drones to fly around and do it by themselves.

The Salvage Computer will always put mined material into any connected Storage modules. Auto pull can be always OFF, unless you wanted the drone to pull from a station or ship when it's docked.

Usually I leave auto-pull on the station turned ON all the time, both to automatically unload docking ships and to prevent the station from being unloaded. For a drone carrier which needs to pull from docked drones, you can trigger it's Storage auto-pull with an Activation Module linked to its Storage Module. For easy control, an Inner Ship Remote can be connected to the Activation Module, and then place on the Hotbar via the Weapons panel.

Fleet mining is still buggy (for most players, I assume). Presumably the AI will continue to improve.

Thx for clarification! The drones do mine as long as there is a mothership aka min 2 ships in fleet. Single ships/drone don't do anything. I was so happy at least this worked out for all the time i put in.

The annoying part is:

a) the mining ships tend to fly into a star so you have to fly em around :/

b) the rail logic is such a mess especially when the advanced building mode bugges out every couple mins.

I tried a modified version of the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17gHkVByq6U carrier tut by Gmodism. But i was unable to dock/launch the drones. I had to manually de-/attach them. unfortunately the ore transfer didnt work.

Setup:
Drone has 1x Storage. C on rail docker + V on Storage + auto pull off
Carrier had 1x Storage. C on Basic Rail (6x) + V on Storage + C on Storage + V on multiple cargo + pull is on

Did i miss something? Or prolly one of those random bugs?

Is there a tut how to automate the bee swarm? Like i just give the mining command and they will start to mine till full and return to unload + launch when empty without an additional intervention? Or is there at least a way to put a display on the carrier so i can see the cargo space (full/empty) of the drones?

On your carrier Storage Module did the block types/categories in the auto-pull filter? By default, it pulls nothing.

There is currently no way to automate the carrier launch/recall commands. Adding a display to the carrier to see the drone cargo capacity is doable with logic, but not trivial. Yay that did the trick thx!!! I forgot to set the cargo filter :P Lets see if i can get the carrier rails to work...^^

I must be crazy?? Or maybe something has changed shince then?? But I'm attempting this now on a smaller scale so that I can do on my large scale. I've a huge ship full and need to unload it. So i've built a smaller ship to try and get everything to work. I have on the ship 5k armor I'm trying to transfer (as my test). I have a rail docker which I've used to hook up to the storage computer (on the ship). The storage's auto pull is OFF. On my station I have about 200k storage so far. I have a Basic Rail hooked up to the storage computer (On the station) and have the auto pull turned ON. I have the "change items to auto pull" set to the max 99999999999 (or whatever). Nothing is happening though. Currently only like 1% of my storage is being used. So it is not lack of space. Any suggestions?

i found a friendly player and figured it out!

care to enlighten us?
my cargo transf is a bit rusty :P

Ok i've been here in the forums and on youtube for help with drones and mining but literally everything i found was so badly out of date that i had to teach myself...so i'm sharing everything i've learned to date, but i'm still learning and experimenting. Feel free to try these out for yourselves. Everything i post here is current and tested.

I have not found a limit to drone size. I literally built my super mining barge with 15,000 salvage modules in fifty-module groups and set it to mine as a drone and it worked. I sized the drones down though...docking big drones is a huge pain. Drones seem to need to be close to a rock when commanded to mine. I suspect if there is no rock within range of their salvage modules they'll just sit there. Accuracy is an issue, so build your drones with as wide an array as you like but make sure they have a beam close to their center. Fast drones are nice for deploying but the faster they go the harder they will slam into your carrier when you call them back, and the more difficult their docking. I have mine nice and slow and they seem to have minimal difficulty. Give your drones a storage and lots of cargo space, don't forget to link their docking rail and salvage computer to the storage. Yes, i have found you have to have a Bobby AI in your mining drones. I haven't been able to get them to respond to fleet commands without it. Luckily when you assign the drone to your fleet the Bobby sets itself up so you don't have to. A quick word on unloading (i launch mine manually and recall them manually because my drones have so much storage they won't fill up even after an hour of steady mining so i can see if they return on their own) you connect the drone docking rail to their storage. Then you have to make sure auto pull is ON (this took hours of messing around to discover and i did so by accident) and you set it to pull everything with a decent amount (i go a million. Go big or go home!!). While in flight or build mode in the drone, press the Tab key (default settings) to bring up your radial menu, click Ship, click Rail Load/Unload Settings, and click Always allow (set it to ask permission and it may not work as a drone, i don't know) and make sure on your mothership the drones are stopping on an Unload Rail that is connected to the mothership storage with Autopull on, everything selected to pull and a number. No, these settings will not cause your mining goodies to be pulled back into the drones, it's a one way flow. That's as far as i've gotten at the moment. I have a small carrier with six drones and they seem to work very well with little interruption. Happy droning, everybody!!
