yeah, this is a great love story
Oh boy, yeah that must've been so long ago. I'm not exactly sure about the mixed reviews, but what I do know is that Starmade has been very silent for awhile. If you're simply looking for a singleplayer experience, I would say go for it and get the game. There has been so many changes since the version used in the video. However, if you're looking for any multiplayer then that may be some trouble. Last time I played, which was a couple months ago, I rarely joined any servers. When I did, there was little to no players online and even less interaction with them.
It's disappointing, but Starmade has more or less fallen off the face of the earth in a purely popular standpoint. Barely anyone plays it, much less any youtubers or streamers.
the reason why the reviews are so mixed / so different now than they were before is because the games core mechanics were overhauled, which resulted in thousands of hours of ship building to be out of date. They would still WORK but you couldn't use them with the new system until you redesigned them. those of us who were in this game, were addicted AF. I have a single ship that i put 700 hours into building, which I just cant really build up the courage to try tackling that project. I'm not the only one in this situation. when the new update dropped, multiplayer server owners had to world wipe to get the new update; and NOTHING kills a community like a server wipe.
have a good day!
(ps. if you do get into space engineers, the way mods are implemented is seamless and really adds a lot of value to the game.)
face it SE fan, the game didnt get content update for long time. the only thing you have is piston
Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill. lol
like many games, I bet the actual game has not changed at all. people review based on what a developer says, not what the actual game is like
Over the years that this game has been released, so little has changed that if I wasn't aware that the infrequent updates had come out I'd have thought there were no updates at all. That's not necessarily a bad thing on its own but as an early access game for $15, the game has not made enough improvement to justify its price or status. Certainly, over years you'd be able to add something in terms of content.
Adding to the fire here is that the community seems to be all but dead. When I got on around midday, I found that of all the available servers, a total of 4 players were even playing the game (excluding me, of course). I had been interested in playing alone, so I can't really comment on the players who were online.
Ultimately, I would not recommend the game either - its price outweighs its content in my opinion. Maybe if it were only a couple dollars.
What kind of kills it for me is that there's no real survival element to it - you might as well just play in creative. Collecting resources on a planet just isn't challenging or fun - it's just boring until you get enough to put a mining ship together, and at that point it's just tedious fodder until you have enough to put together your next project. If you had to actually fight off pirates or aliens or enemy factions during this sort of "filler" period then the game might be great fun, but as it stands now you might as well just load into creative to skip the boring part really.
If the devs came back to working on it and kept at it for a year the game would probably end up in a pretty good state. But as it stands now there're no servers up and nothing exciting in this game.
I absolutely love this game but given the devs have run out of cash pretty much and have to go do day jobs to save up funds to continue development, the over all development of this game might as well be dead (as far as steam is concerned). Buying in at this point is to maybe try and help towards that goal but i can't say for sure.
As far as the actual game is concerned i am looking at this now more like a Dwarf Fortress situation, a passion project that they work on in their spare time. I am pretty sure the free version is still available on their website too, so if you wanna check out the current state then go grab that.
