Mixed reviews
When I was Younger I loved this game, I enjoyed the Minecraft in space. I didn't know about early access / steam release (I found this game today) and I'd like to buy Starmade. However I'm confused because reviews are bad / mixed.

Can u say why?

Oh boy, yeah that must've been so long ago. I'm not exactly sure about the mixed reviews, but what I do know is that Starmade has been very silent for awhile. If you're simply looking for a singleplayer experience, I would say go for it and get the game. There has been so many changes since the version used in the video. However, if you're looking for any multiplayer then that may be some trouble. Last time I played, which was a couple months ago, I rarely joined any servers. When I did, there was little to no players online and even less interaction with them.

It's disappointing, but Starmade has more or less fallen off the face of the earth in a purely popular standpoint. Barely anyone plays it, much less any youtubers or streamers.

I suggest skipping this game and getting either Space Engineers, Empyrion, or Avorion. I own all three and they are all excellent and do a better job of being mine craft in space than this unfinished abandoned mess.

I'm with Infinite Pudding here. Starmade has the best fleet mechanics of any of the space sandbox builders, but that's it's largest victory. I played before the energy / systems overhaul. was a fun game, but there are better games in the genre. I personally recommend space engineers, if you're into the design and realism. very physics based, and you will destroy your creations more times than you use them until you figure out how to really make things. Avorion is a better game for USING the things you make. it's easy to build ships and they do a great job mixing customization with ease of use.

the reason why the reviews are so mixed / so different now than they were before is because the games core mechanics were overhauled, which resulted in thousands of hours of ship building to be out of date. They would still WORK but you couldn't use them with the new system until you redesigned them. those of us who were in this game, were addicted AF. I have a single ship that i put 700 hours into building, which I just cant really build up the courage to try tackling that project. I'm not the only one in this situation. when the new update dropped, multiplayer server owners had to world wipe to get the new update; and NOTHING kills a community like a server wipe.

have a good day!

(ps. if you do get into space engineers, the way mods are implemented is seamless and really adds a lot of value to the game.)

I'd say mixed because they keep completely redesigning the systems of the game to the point where it is near impossible for a new player to figure out before they loose patience and uninstall it.

How are Empyrion or Avorion? I tried Space Engineers but got turned off on how the focus was more about obsessive-level resource management and extraneous details rather than space exploration.

like many games, I bet the actual game has not changed at all. people review based on what a developer says, not what the actual game is like

I played this game near when it released as EA (with the old launcher, no accounts - everything). I played this game again today. It feels like absolutely nothing has changed.

Over the years that this game has been released, so little has changed that if I wasn't aware that the infrequent updates had come out I'd have thought there were no updates at all. That's not necessarily a bad thing on its own but as an early access game for $15, the game has not made enough improvement to justify its price or status. Certainly, over years you'd be able to add something in terms of content.

Adding to the fire here is that the community seems to be all but dead. When I got on around midday, I found that of all the available servers, a total of 4 players were even playing the game (excluding me, of course). I had been interested in playing alone, so I can't really comment on the players who were online.

Ultimately, I would not recommend the game either - its price outweighs its content in my opinion. Maybe if it were only a couple dollars.

This game never really took off in the end, thanks to the devs and lack of planing. the game has mixed reviews in part because the devs have left it in Alpha state. TBH the reviews should be negative but some SM fans still hold onto the pipe dream of this game becoming something decent. it's been over a year since this game had any update. All this mess represents is empty promises from the developers. if i could I would get a refund.

It's a very fun sandbox to play with imo. More fun than Space Engineers because things are much less complicated and tedious, and more fun than Avorion because you can actually design your own weapons and systems not to mention walk around on planets or in your ship/station.

What kind of kills it for me is that there's no real survival element to it - you might as well just play in creative. Collecting resources on a planet just isn't challenging or fun - it's just boring until you get enough to put a mining ship together, and at that point it's just tedious fodder until you have enough to put together your next project. If you had to actually fight off pirates or aliens or enemy factions during this sort of "filler" period then the game might be great fun, but as it stands now you might as well just load into creative to skip the boring part really.

If the devs came back to working on it and kept at it for a year the game would probably end up in a pretty good state. But as it stands now there're no servers up and nothing exciting in this game.

been playing this since long before it ever landed on steam, i can't recommend buying it.

I absolutely love this game but given the devs have run out of cash pretty much and have to go do day jobs to save up funds to continue development, the over all development of this game might as well be dead (as far as steam is concerned). Buying in at this point is to maybe try and help towards that goal but i can't say for sure.

As far as the actual game is concerned i am looking at this now more like a Dwarf Fortress situation, a passion project that they work on in their spare time. I am pretty sure the free version is still available on their website too, so if you wanna check out the current state then go grab that.
