For controllers, up/down on the main menu is a little odd, as it requires left/right inputs of the stick. It would also be better if the d-pad could also navigate.

This reminds me of a game that was made in....80~90s? It allowed you to chose a special weapon once before every stage! you can't use that special weapon again in any other stage and the number of usage depended on the power of the special weapon! I think there were more than 10+ that you can chose and not all of them were for damage! I just remember my favourite which one a 1 time only usage! a a big laser beam that can down bosses! Does anyone by chance remember the name of the game!?...
