how do I switch apps while playing realMyst on Mac? It traps cmd-tab

I've started playing realMyst on MacOS 12.2.1 Monterey. Whether I play in full screen or windowed, I seem to be trapped in the game. I want to be able to cmd-tab or use the expose gesture on the trackpad to switch out. For example, to take notes. The game seems to trap all the usual ways to switch out though. Is there a way to do so?
