I'm just starting and am already completely lost :-(
So I've walked across this island for 4 hours now and still don't have the slighest clue what I'm supposed to do.
I keep turning switches, but nothing happens. I've found stories and symbols in books, but they're telling me nothing helpful at all. I've found a letter and got the message in the water bassin, but it is absolutely no help. I can "turn the tower", I hear some noise but it changes nothing.
I'm about to delete this whole waste of time. What the heck am I supposed to do here??
The only positive thing in my first 4 hours was a beautiful sunset.

As a general tip, I suggest you keep a notebook handy and write everything down you deem as important. Also no shame in doing other things and coming back to difficult puzzles later on.
If you are truly and utterly stuck, there is an in-game help feature that essentially serves as a guided walkthrough.

Hmm. Seems like I'm stuck at the tower which doesn't seem to work for me.
i activate the Marker Switch near the black Cogs; I move the tower on the plan inside the library so that the line from the tower crosses the Cogs' position; I go into the corridor and go up the elevator - but there's no open window and no plaque to be found.
maybe I have to do something else to make it work?

oh my, I finally got it!
when you keep the tower button (on the plan) pressed, the beam will lock in some positions and become red. and only then you can read the signs.
I guess I have to become more patient and observing for this game. but I'm glad, after 5 hours of exploring the journey can now begin!
Thank you both for your help!

And you brained it out on your own.
Likely what Gharren was suggesting, frustration can throttle the mind and block the obvious. Cold eye helped me big time, shutting the game down and doing something else, unrelated, often popped solutions into my head

If you aren't ashamed to take a hint the best site I found back in the day was uhs-hints.com as it gives itty bitty hints rather than huge spoilers. It's still available.

Yup. It's a great set of hints.
It lets you proceed very slowly, so you can read only as much of the hints as you need/want to, and without spoiling other hints.
