First spoiler
This ages puzzles are based on sound. The puzzle will tell you its solution.
Second spoiler in case first insufficient, please have another go at before looking at this one.
Each direction has a sound associated with it.
Third spoiler
Whenever you reach the correct next step it gives you a sound telling you what direction to take.
Fourth spoiler if previous insufficient (please don't binge all of the spoilers at once you'll lose the joy of figuring it out)
North, South, East, and West Each have a distinct sound. The sounds are combined in instances such as North-East where you have the North and then the East.
Fifth spoiler
In the Mechanical Age the device used for simulating turning the fortress made the same sounds whenever you landed the fortress. Although in order to use it you kinda of have to go back there so it is not quite that useful, but the maze is quite doable without as it gives itself away.
