Chronologically, in order of release. it's Myst (Masterpiece Edition OR realMyst: Masterpiece Edition), Riven (II), Myst III, Myst IV, URU, then Myst V.
As the overarching story unfolds, swap out URU and Myst V in the list above, as Myst V begins before, but ends during URU.
Recommendation-wise, it's entirely subjective. You'll get a lot of different opinions on which one is best.
Hope that helps!
Do you recomedn RealMyst over Myst? I understand that it's the same game but with better graphics but it's more expensive.
Original Myst like Riven through Myst IV uses the slideshow style format, which although it does not allow for smooth transitions I think does more to excite the imagination as you fill in the gaps. When I think back to games the enviroments I tend to think about most are the ones that made you feel like you could walk into them as if you are looking at pictures from another place.
A good post from current developers of slideshow style games talking about the effect;

realMyst does have more detail in comparison to the original Myst and does have smoother transitions by having realtimes graphics and will let you view things at angles you cannot in original Myst and also has the additional Rime age not in the original.
If you decide you want the full experience I would suggest playing original Myst, realMyst and then Riven. You could wishlist realMyst and just keep an eye out for a a sale while playing the original Myst.
