As for the stupid "fix" of simply not cutting the corners, it's very easy to just miss a corner accidentally, even a little bit, and unfortunately, the penalty is too sensitive and it takes a very small amount of going off to trigger the damned thing.
Practice mode = no penalties
Hotlap mode = penalties
Get rid of it. Just make the grass thick and sticky with a soft substrate.
However I feel like offline it shouldn't be a thing, at all. If you play against AI like I will be, you're only taking the fun and enjoyment out of the whole idea when you pass half the field by going around a chicane.
Online, and hotlap challenges with leaderboards need a penalty system. Hotlaps would be rather simple, 2 tyres need to be on the 'on-course' area at all times, otherwise invalidated lap, 1 or 2 second throttle cut (think about it, some tracks you could potentially take a few seconds off the next lap time by cutting the last corner alot, invalidated time would only be for the CURRENT lap, still having an advantage for the next).
Online races, as in PVP type....that's a whole different bucket. There needs to be a penalty system like what we currently have. The only issue I have with it right now is the instant throttle cut. For those of us who have or will be racing in leagues, it's going to do more damage than anything, we need the throttle to help us get out of spins if we get a bit too far off track and lose the grip. Now for public races, as it is right now is good....simply because in my experience there's a whole bunch of trolls, ♥♥♥♥♥ and disrespectful people plaguing online race games. Sims aren't immune to it sadly, I lost count of the amount of times I've been in a race and had someone do nothing but take everyone out. A throttle cut and slow down penalty will go a long way to stop those sort of people cutting the track to do that.
What if you're pushed off the track? Perhaps with some good AI, we should be able to flag the "troll" for barging and the penalty would not apply to the bargee.
Cutting throttle or any artificial inhibitor is obscene. Keep it real from the getgo.
Was that changed in the update? Because when I played the initial release, there were still penalties in both modes.
Once I'm on track with other people, yes.
It's certainly better than wreckless idiots continually driving straight through chicanes.
Then tell me if a half black flag is issued for a drive through after - usually 2 - warnings are issued for intentionally cutting corners. No warning is issued for accidently running off track unless you are considered as driving dangerously or have no reason to have done so.
Even the worlds best put their tyres in the grass. They do not get penalised.
AC needs to invalidate entire lap for multiple infringements or force a drive-through for *2 or more infringements* (specifically when AI/MP starts).
It's a racing sim, not an arcade game.
FIA Rule: Drive-through penalties are normally imposed for minor offences, for example crossing the white line at the end of the pit lane before passing over the end of the line, kerb-hopping at chicanes, ignoring yellow flags, or cutting corners.
This is a game, there are no drivers briefings before a race and there is no independant race stewards to say were cutting corners or going wide is ok, so with that in mind it is impossible to make a code that resembles true independant rules. Every game code is written in either black or white, there is no grey area, so the penaty system in game is there so everyone get the same penalties, as you have already explained you know the penalties so you know not to go off track, if you can not drive within the track limits or within the game penalty system then you need to improve your drivng skills, there is no way the game can read your mind and know if you made a mistake or if you deliberately cut the corner, so you will recieve a penalty which in turn will make you a better driver, which i hope it does for us concerned who can drive without going off track when multiplayer is online.
You can get drive through penalties for continuosly cutting corners and gaining an advantage, and yes the best drivers in the world do cut corners and go wide some times, if in the driver breifing before the race they are warned not to, then they do it, they will be penalised, but you cant have driver briefings in AC unless you have league races which the penalty system maybe turned off. So that puts us back on the AC penalty system which works fine for me and others in my group, the rules are the same for everyone, no one is gaining an advantage apart from the people who can drive properly, so you are rewarded for not going off track and penalised when you do. This is the best option to let the best drivers race fairly upfront and let the not so good drivers race behind and practice their skills with other drivers who are not so good.
