I too have had rF2 since the beta release in Feb 2012 but the lack of content and the ridiculously long beta stage, almost 2 years, have completely turned me off this sim.
The physics and road dynamics are top notch in rF2 and it has solid netcode but the AI is terrible and it does not have the same community feel as the original rFactor.
The graphics side of rF2 is seriously dated, DX9 is old hat and it certainly shows compared to AC which feels an allround better sim although alot hinges on the netcode and the AI which has yet to be implemented.
User Interface in rF2 is just plain terrible and lacks the career mode of AC which has an excellent UI.
Alot will depend on the modding community who are the unsung heroes of these simulations, if they decide to put there resources into the Steam protected AC then that will be the sim to reach new heights which is the way it is looking at the moment. There is an issue with modded material being ripped off and sold as payware which has turned modders off rF2.
And then there are other features, where AC clearly wins - graphics, optimization, loading times, user-friendly interface, etc. Overall impression is, that AC is more polished and made for users, initial settings will take you only few minutes and currently it looks like a final product with some missing features and content. rF2 looks like it is far behind in everything except physics.
So it is up to you, if you prefer street cars, then you should definitely go to AC, if you prefer race cars and you are ready to "fight" with UI, go to rF2. I like the overall status of AC, it has a big future ahead with many official licenses, laser scanned tracks and mod support.
the DX9_DX11 debate is not an issue ... see if you can tell which is the better {out of PCars}

I guess it's a matter of wait and see as AC roll out more of the content and see how this effects their 3D engine performance.
I've never had an issue with the rfactor interface ... must be one of the lucky ones ;)
cheers all
As I said in another thread here I feel that ISI missed the target by a mile. The told us we didn't need DirectX 11 yet all their competitors are using or moving to DX11. They told us we don't need laser scanned tracks and yet their competitors are using laser scanning for their tracks. rFactor can look good but you need a seriously good system to run it in its higher quality settings and even then it compares badly to Assetto Corsa, pCars and iRacing. I can run Assetto Corsa in 1080p with some nice detail turned on and it looks fantastic, I can't do that in rFactor 2 so on my settings there is very little discernible difference over rFactor 1. The menu system in rFactor 2 is terrible, low res, blocky and compared to Assetto Corsa it takes an age to get anywhere and do anything. One thing that impressed me with Assetto Corsa was the loading times - very slick and a big thumbs up.
Its 2013 and ISI are still padding out their content with fantasy tracks and cars, I'm sorry but that just doesn't cut it if you want to charge a premium rate and a yearly fee on top for multiplayer if you don't pay even more initially. Assetto Corsa's release is far more polished than rFactor 2 was just under two years ago though admittedly there is no multiplayer in Assetto Corsa which was slightly disappointing.
As I said above there is not much to choose between rFactor 2, iRacing and Assetto Corsa in the physics, I don't buy into the hype about rFactor 2. Netkar Pro always had good physics it was marred by a terrible UI and broken multiplayer code. Assetto Corsa still has those great physics, with a slick UI and Kunos fixed the multiplayer in netkar Pro. Graphically Assetto Corsa tops all three and I know some will say its all about the physics but to be properly immersed in a simulation you also need to have that suspension of disbelief, the visuals that make you forget you're sat at your computer with a fake steering wheel. The cockpit look great, by comparison rFactor 2's look distinctly last gen but maybe that's the superior lighting in Assetto Corsa. The tree's are still the kind of slotted together cardboard cut out's we see in other sims yet in Assetto Corsa I had to drive right up to them to see if they were done in the same way as other sims, in rFactor 2 much of the time the roadside objects just scream 'FAKE' at me and it ruins that suspension of disbelief. Even down to the small clever little touches that are insignificant when measured against other features but all add up together to aid that immersion factor like the gear stick vibrating as you apply throttle in the Lotus 49.
I have all the modern sims installed on my PC, I'd recommend people try all of them and see which one 'fits' with them and while I'm quite heavily invested in iRacing with my subscription running until next year and I have bought all the content to date its Assetto Corsa I feel will be taking up most of my racing time.
I just watched this vid by emptybox http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvUDvMdlH0w .... would suggest if your thinking about buying AC, watch the vid first, so at least you will kinda know what your getting ;)
Hmmm ... just on the subject of graphics, I do run rFactor 2 on ultra with HDR profiles and scripted weather and it looks great. AC looks sterile in comparison, but it's early days.
Shame there is no AI or MP ... at this point there is no reason to rush in, I think I'll wait till they release their network code.
In the meantime back to my LOLA T70 .... ahhh I mean Houston G4, at Brianza ... ahhh Monza.
hahahahaha this is hilarious this guy quotes the modders in rf stationg they would move their mod to AC when it releases.. that was me the modder saying that we would move the ISM mod in rfactor ro AC but the team opted to finish it in rf1 and that was it hahah its great
wish I had not bothered to buy it. AC on the other hand is way more polished product, and I have only tried three cars on one track :)
pCARS is crap, very nice graphics, but physics is CRAP, it feels like hoovering not driving.
SimBin RRE is OK, nice graphics and usefull physics, not as good as rFactor2, but still fun to drive.
AC has very nice graphics AND very good physics and FFB, feels very natural and real.
We only need good KI and nice curcuits and AC is the winner. I NEED the NORDSCHLEIFE !!!
Wouldn't call rFactor 2 epic fail ... far from it ... and as I you can see AC is not without issues, I know it's only Alpha, but let's allow the dust to settle and see where we end up ;)
ATM it seems like a big ask, for you to part with $30 for a racing game you cannot race in lol.
hearing ya m8 lol ... he's a bit caught up in the hype ;) but right about one thing, it will need the modding communitys support behind it.

A WIP version of Nordschleife, graphics look great, especially considering it is unfinished.
But like I said, my choice goes to Assetto Corsa, overall better graphics, physics, UI, built in telemetry and other data, records and keeps your laptimes. Rfactor 2 has a lot of potential and I think it could still evolve into something special, but right now Assetto Corsa is about to take the forefront in PC racing simulation, I love it.
I realise Rfactor 2 has more features such as night racing, the real road, tyre deformation and flatspotting etc, but ultimately I think the quality of the basic experience in Assetto Corsa makes up for those things.
A real driving simulation fan will own both games, in my eyes they are the top 2 simulation titles available on any platform, Rfactor 2 and Assetto Corsa are the new generation.
On the telementry side try the MoTeC data accquition plug-in and DL a copy of MoTeC Pro here: http://www.motec.com/
And I agree ... there is always room for one more sim on the HHD ;D ... Just a matter of wait and see how the development goes, waiting for the net code to be released, before I jump in.
