Keep practising, and ask again when you can do laptimes constantly within 2 seconds with the default setup. :)

As a sidenote; 'setups' are more often than not, a personal thing. A great driver may be fast with 'setup X', you give 'setup X' to another great driver and he'll be horribly slow. (Well, maybe not horribly, but he just might not be comfortable with it, so he'll be slower)

What I'm getting at is, you need to setup up your car to suit *your* style as best as possible. And if, and only IF, when you feel like you've done everything you can with the setup and you're still not 'fast enough', you might have to start considering altering how you drive. Which is a lot of work.

It took me about 100 hours of playtime to figure out how to know what needed to be adjusted on the car. You really need to be able to take a corner more or less the same every time, or you won't be able to tell if the car is handling better because of your setup, or because you just took a better line this time around.

When you start getting consistent laptimes, you'll be able to see the car consistently behave in a manner you don't like (Lots of tire squeal and understeer on corner entry, for example) Then, you can adjust your setup to address the issue.

http://www.drivingfast.net/ has a bunch of really good race driving tips that work just fine in AC. Including some flowcharts for making suspension adjustments!
