maybe I found the issue. Please make this try: go in your Steam Folder\SteamApps\common\assettocorsatracks\magione
\data
and open audio_sources.ini.
Change the following line:
ENABLED=1
to
ENABLED=0
Save, launch the game, take a car and select Magione. Try now if the 5.1 is working.
This sorta works, but the file path shown is wrong... here's where you find the .INI file(s)...
\Steam\SteamApps\common\assettocorsa\content\tracks\<track name>\data
It only enables some audio, mostly engine sounds (just yours), from the rear speakers, but I didn't notice any "positional" audio. For example, when I got bumped by an AI car, it doesn't matter where they hit you or how hard, it always plays the same sound sample from the front speakers only. And it's a pretty terrible sound too. I can think of at least a half dozen other racing games with better and more realistic interior sounds. It's a good thing it's only a release candidate and not the actual finished game.
"I had the same bug, so I went to the command prompt of the game and I read the following: INIReader: /Documents/Assetto Corsa/cfg/audio.ini > KEY_NOT_FOUND: [LEVELS] OPPONENTS. So I just added the line "opponents=1" to my audio.ini file of my documents folder and now I can hear the opponents engines just fine."
