McLaren MP4-12C GT3 Handling...
So I went ahead and purchased at the weekend and love it. I'm not new to sims, having played LFS, GTR2 and rFactor previously.

However, as much as I'd love to, I cannot make the McLaren GT3 a driveable car.

In particular, it seems to have a horrible tendency to lose the rear of the car in mid-high speed corners (3rd and 5th gear) and I'm not sure why. It also seems really unsettled at Silverstone into Maggotts and Becketts.

Does anyone else find this with the McLaren or is this just my driving style?

I've been ok in comparable cars e.g. the Lotus, BMW GT3's...

Separate to that, I have a query on AI pace...

I'm running the AI at 98% and I really struggle. My times are 2:05.xx at Silverstone, 1:12.xx at Magione, which - when the AI doesn't crash into me, is good enough for a top 10 finish at both but tends to be more dependent on my opposition and where I end up starting relative to them. I'd like to think at <100% I should be capable of winning but this could either be a) a general level of incompetence by me; b) AI balancing or c) bad car setups. Which of these is it likely to be?

FWIW I'm playing using an Xbox controller, traction control on; I've also played with stability off entirely or at 50%.

For the rear-end issue, I'd suggest either increasing the Diff Power percentage, or reducing the Rear ARB by a click. The latter will make the rear feel a little sluggish, but should slow down the rate at which it snaps away from you.
Or, simply increase the Rear Aero by 5 or so notches, then work your way backwards to find a setting that allows you to throw yourself into the corners without losing the rear or understeering off the track.
I've also found that softer suspension in general (more-so on the rear for this issue) helps the drivability of the GTs. At least if you plan on attacking kerbs.

The GT cars are deceptively hard to drive. I usually race with the AI at 100%, but have always struggled in the GTs relative to my performances in other cars.

That said, IRL the McLaren is known for being a little twitchy when pushed.

Oh yeah, it is indeed quite twitchy at the rear end of the McLaren. In fact, I thought the rear wheels are driving on water. What I did was increase the rear aero by a few notches and suddenly, the car felt more nimble.

As for the AIs, at 100%, the fastest car can clock a very respectable lap time, frequently quite close to my hotlap fastest. I don't do a lot to my car to get insanely low lap time and I would like to think I am slightly above average. When I am the first on the grid, the second driver although never had a chance to overtake me, did came a couple of seconds behind me at some point when I made mistakes. When I set the AI at 90%, they are really no challenge at all as I am gaining an average of 5 seconds lap time on them.

Do note that the comments made about the AI was based on a one-make race using the BMW M3 GT2.on the Nürburgring GP.

Yeah same here, the GT3 McLaren rear end goes everywhere on Silverstone. I upped the aero of the rear wing, soften the psi of the rear tyres, less camber on the front and rear wheels, more diff coast, softened the rear suspension, set splitter to 0 and upped the rear ARB.
It has much more control, still it does tend to lose the rear sometimes and now I'm struggling to keep up in the fast corners. I think it's a hard car to drive and why the FIA decided to reduce the horsepower of this car to equal the driving standards in GT3 is a big question mark to me as the BMW Z4 is also a very manouvrable car with lots of downforce but quite a bit more HP.

P.S.: I use a 360 controller, I guess a wheel would give much more feeling and handling, especially for midship cars.

for me i would love to remove every maclaren from my game ! they are horrible , loose rear ends ,poor cornering and worst hopeless brakes !

have you tried fiddling with the car setup?

A 2 and a half year old thread dug up. After countless updates this is how the car is. There is nothing wrong with it. Maybe try setting it up or downloading someones setup for it.

personally i would happily pay a tenner for a DLC that simply removes every MKAclaren from the game ! They are horrible to drive , worse to setup and even though getting good times and winning is possible they have a tendency to suddenly switch to the default settings mid race ... This means after spending hours getting a setup that allows you to drive quickly and a little stability the car suddenly becomes undriveable at any speed ! ,,, i have had the mp4 12c gt3 spin out on corners whilst driving really slowly in high gear with no throttle ! ... Defo s problem somewhere!

A normal driver deals with oversteer the same way like he deals with understeer, by driving at the right speed. And usually an oversteery car is faster than similarly understeery one, thats why there is so much mid engined (oversteery) cars in racing today.
Only some simracers seem to have a problem with it thou. Mostly because they end up being controlled by their car which is fine for understeer but then they wonder why it's soo bad when it's oversteer time.

How long will you gonna whine about the AI or the cars before manning up and actually taking control of the car?

You don't need hours to get a fast setup, the problem is that default set IS the fast setup. In contrast with many other AC default setups being on the safe (understeery) side.
Also even if you wanted to tweak it for yourself, just increase front roll bar by couple clicks and be done in couple minutes not hours.

And im not even a fan of mclarens, they are trash yeah, but nothing undrivable on them if you know what you are doing.

Yes and i can get some decent < not great lap times .. at least for me ! > but after setting up a maclaren and getting it driveable and quick ,,, i enter a career race , load the setup .. totaly different car ! ... once is amusing but it is far too often ,, maybe the car is a fickle beast ! but if it is so fickle then an endurance event would be almost impossible in real life ... Glad i never bought one ! i would sooner have a reliant robin ,,, at least those beggers are predictable !
