McLaren MP4-12C ♥♥♥♥ handling
I really like the McLaren MP4 and I always have heard of it as an agile and sharp car, very precise in the corners and with a good handling. In assetto corsa it feels like a fat truck launched at 300 km/h, handles like ♥♥♥♥, lots of understeer, oversteer is uncontrollable, brakes like its brake disks are made of wet soap (even if it has the cool animation of the airbrake that doesn't help) and it feels like there is very little grip even with semislicks. The lack of setting possibilities just makes things worse as i would like to increase anti-roll bar to avoid the car wobbling all over the place, also higher compression values in the suspension would help, but a lower coast differential would be essential to reduce understeer and enanche agility and braking.
It handles very bad ad it feels heavy, is it just me?

i dont know what its reputation is but i agree. compared to the gt3 version which is one of the easiest & most reponsive cars it is especailly amazing.

That would be because it's a GT car, and has much more downforce.

OP, how long have you been playing with the MP4, I find it to be very agile, and tonnes of fun to play with, you just need to play for quite a bit with it, it's a bit of a beast.

Are you playing with TC and ABS on ? The real thing is supposed to be driven with these.

Although I do agree to some extent (not much into this car either), it's still considerably faster than Italia on the leaderboards, seems legit to me.

It seems to be realistic. The real cars is to be driven with plenty of electronc assistance on, but that gives it somewhat a will of its own, about which some drivers indeed complain. You can find some videos at youtube where some TV car show does the MP4 and the driver/moderator drives it and conclude that it is slittle fun to drive. There is one video where it is especially compared against the 458, and after he drove the 458, the tester tried the MP4 and landed in the green, cursing the car's non-entertaining driving manner. This is because the car does what the assistants should make it do: but that often works antagonistically to what the driver wants to do with the car. The electroncis thus prevent driver's will. Without these systems, the car becomes a real primadonna, imo.

In the sim, drive that thing slow in corners. The right way to bite back with it, lies in the tremendous acceleration power it has. This thing is not so much for taking corners fast, the assistances will mess up that more or less often. Trust the acceleration, though, it more than compensates.

With the MP4 GT3 it is different though, that car is a joy to drive. But the factory cars, I prefer thre 458 over the MP4 any time. The 458 turns the track into my friend and partner to dance with. The MP4 in itself is an opponent I need to fight against.

Switching off the electronic gizzmos, does not really make things better, imo.

I avoid the default MP4. But I like the GT3 version.

No i have in fact disabled TC (ABS is still active even if you disable it as an help as it is installed in the car i believe), and i have also heard that much of the stability comes from electronic systems, but TC didn't do much difference to me (just in accelleration), maybe i'm wrong.
I also tried an AI race between the McLaren MP4 and the Ferrari 458 (AI piloting both, i stood back on a different car) and the Ferrari won all the times, the fact that the MP4 is faster on the leaderboards hints there is something wrong.

I drive it as i drive the 458 italia with the same helps active, but the 458 is far more grippy and agile even if on paper the MP4 should corner better (not sure anymore), it has even similar if not better accelleration making the MP4 pointless, and i'm not even talking about the Step3 version! I also, like i said before, let the AI drive with not much better results.

But TC didn't do much difference, are you sure that assetto corsa simulates this car actual electronics system? because if it doesn't it's pretty pointless to have cars that rely on their electronics to stay on track (still an alpha though).
Also if I drive like you suggest i would do ♥♥♥♥ times because the MP4 can't brake, so if I must take a corner slow i must brake miles before.

If the car comes witth ABS and TC from the factory it will still be active even when turned off from the main menu.. To turn those of completely use ctrl t and ctrl a while on track.
yusupov Mar 7, 2014 @ 6:02am
i agree w/ ilama i have mostly driven the 458 & the mp4 has he says is verrry slow to break & turn in comparison. it seems to accelerate very fast in the 60-130 range but other than that i don't see its advantages.
CLN Flushed Mar 7, 2014 @ 6:02am
A guess is that assetto corsa doesn't simulate advanced electronics, the kind of systems McLaren relies on (not talking about the TC toggleable help).

Didn't know that! thanks!
I knew that it had ABS from the factory but i didn't know it was toggleable, i also didn't know that there is a stock TC

The stock TC is off by default, turning it on is a great improvement, thanks!

+1 i almost ignored this bc i drive w/ full assist but it seems that TC is disabled by default anyway. thanks a bunch for this tip.

It still brakes slower than a full loaded cargo ship but now the handling is not that bad

Ladies and gentleman, the GT3 spec has slick tires, the MP4-12c has road tires. The MP4 IRL is sharp and good with turns (for a road car) but the GT3 and almost all racing cars handle much much better than a road car so what your used to in games is nothing like a high performance car on road tires.
