how to stop car engine dying?
is there a setting i am missing. i don't want any real damage effects yet (because of my bad driving) - but currently if i do a gear shift at the wrong time my car engine dies and i cannot restart the car. the car just drifts along until it comes to a halt.
any help please...

turn on auto shift, or learn to shift the car properly. else your engines/transmission wont make it one lap.

return to pits fixes all just drive out again.
You are in all probability changing down a gear at too high rev's. The easiest way to overcome this is to watch your rev' counter or led display lights for engine rev's. After a while, you can judge by the engine sound alone, but that takes practice.
On the assists page, there's a Mechanical Damage slider; turn it down to 0%.

Kunos badly needs to include a auto recovery system in Assetto corsa, I know AC is based on reality, but it's still a game, flip a vehicle & it stays on its side or on it's roof.
Please Kunos include a auto recovery system.

I guess it's kinda silly now, but once we have damage, no one will want to keep driving something that's been on its roof - in which case "Return To Pits" is fine, while keeping some realism intact.

I can understand how it might be handy when doing solo laps without damage though.
I've not yet rolled, so I'm not sure how frustrating it is.

OP: The main thing you can do is shift down at lower revs. Let the engine wind down a bit, and don't change down if you don't need to. It's a matter of practice. in the mean time, try doing a race with an automatic and watching what RPM it downshifts at; chances are it'll be spot-on.

I've rolled once, but that was an earlier Beta version, back when the game was a lot more beta than it is today. Happened on Monza 1966(the only Monza we had back then) in the Lotus 49A. I tagged the edge of the concrete tunnel under the old bank, just after the second Lesmo corner. Rolled the car and spun several times-would have a less severe accident IRL, since the wheel would have come clean off instead of digging in like a climbing hook and hurling the car up the road.

All I had to do was push "back to pits" to recover it. It could be a serious problem once multiplayer arrives, but right now it isn't a huge issue IMO. Rolling a car really takes effort.

I would hope, being a sim, that when multiplayer arrives persistent damage is forced or at least default. Wrecking is the #1 consequence in racing that gives flavor to dogfights, that separates the fast from the slow, that fuels the element of strategy. Slight miscalculations takes people out of races entirely all the time. Danger and fragility is exactly what makes road racing both exciting and challenging.

I disagree. In most racing games I've played, whenever damage is switched on it becomes a demolition derby. Most people I've MPed with see damage on being akin to an objective: wreck everybody else, prevent as many people as possible from finishing.

thank you for your replies.
i know i have been down-shifting with the revs too high.
i was using my gearbox to help with breaking at corners.
but i guess my question really was: is there a way to "return to pits" or reset the car when the damage gets too severe to continue?
because at the moment i watch my car glide to a stand still and then i have to start the race all over again - which is frustrating.
i have mechanical damage turned to off and i have auto clutch on.
i dont see the "return to pits" button ???
regards
learn the basics of driving. cut your gas while shifting, dont shift down to early. dont overturn your engine. this sim is not like need for speed or ridge racer!

Again, this is supposed to be a no apologies simulation. iRacing also has a brutally unforgiving damage model that cannot be disabled at all. Accidents happen, but hey, that's racing!

Could easily be solved if they let the host decide the rules so that they can turn off damage if they want to.

Ofcourse, maybe the other way to look at it, is that maybe I was just playing games that attract the lowest common denominator. I guess we'll have to wait and see with Assetto Corsa; given the community experiences I've had so far I would be surprised if it degenerated into a derby.

There's been a couple of people who've left me questioning if they could even be classified as sentient, given their utter, willing idiocy and ignorance-but I can count them on the fingers of one hand so it's hardly a serious concern when you put them up against the hundreds of others.

you cannot get away with gearbox breaking like you could totally do all day long in gran turismo, and i was often guilty of relying on in gt just because you coulld get away with it.

you have to break earlier if you having to try and use the transmission to slow the car, if you did it in real life your transmission would explode or your engine would, not going to fly here.

hit "esc" on your keyboard, call up the menu voliia "return to pits" soon as you want no wait.

and good luck.

Just hit ESC, and you see the alternatives, for example "Return to pit" or "Restart".
Good luck, and have fun! The teaching comments you already got are all correct, but your driving skills will come in time, have fun while learning.
Off course Return to pit or Restart will mean to break the race (not sure about the Return to pit in an AI race, never tried it...).
EDIT: Oh, cerebus just beat me... ;)

thanks again everyone for your replies.
i have now put the automatic shifting on and am learning to break much earlier than i was used to.
i can imagine many people's concern about having drivers like me on board when multiplayer becomes availible. But don't worry, by then i think i will have learned to drive a bit better and stoped using all the bad habits i picked up whilst playing DiRT3.
regards
