I have always turned music off in any driving game I've owned and don't play any externally. The closest I would say I have come to going against this tradition would be Wipeout, which is not a true driving game and well, the soundtrack was great.

It depends. When racing, fast beat trance like the ones from wangan midnight fels great. Rock power ballad is good for when cruising in your muscle car. And any catchy music will do when your just putting in hundreds of laps.

I personally like to have only engine sound too, having music disruput the connection of car/track/me, for example it will mislead for a bad interpretation of engine rpm sometimes or delay your response time, but this is for me, I have a better performance without music.

The soundtrack from Top Gear: Overdrive on the N64 for the pure nostalgia trip and awesomeness! I have the uncompressed album on my pc and listening to it sounds sooo different! (the N64 compresses the hell out of music for big games like TG: Overdrive, Goldeneye 007 and Zelda: OOT)

If someone could come up with a mod for AC that lets you listen to music while you race like in Gran Turismo that would be sweet because then we can share custom playlists!
