At least that was the issue for me.
If you've already taken this route, you need to save a controller preset in-game. You'll just enter a name for it, save it, and when you load into a track, you'll see a couple popups on the bottom right confirming the preset has been applied. Then you should be able to drive! :)
I'd suggest going into Documents>Assetto Corsa>cfg and deleting "controllers tab" (this will delete any presets you've made btw). Verify the game cache using steam to get original files back. You can delete the whole assetto corsa folder from the documents tab to reset everything.
I'm sure you've already tested if your controller works on other games properly so I suggest you download "Assetto corsa content manager" (it's free), go to settings > assetto corsa > controls.
And make sure your input method is gamepad. "combine with keyboard" is ticked. And made sure the controller preset is "X360 default" (built in presets tab bottom right next to save preset button).
Test it and see if it works
When I press a button it says that it does and I see it but still cant bind it to another button. (Handbreak)
I'm not sure what you mean that you can't move in the menu. Are you trying to use the controller when you press ESC or when you boot the game?
The game only uses the controller to control the car. You have to use your mouse to navigate through the menus. It's a simulator thing...
Get content manager and do the steps I've laid out in my previous comment. It has more options and will make sure to "force" the key bindings you've set up as long as you saved your preset.
I can't believe none of these issues were never addressed, from the lack of controller support, to the abysmal VR support.
I reinstalled this game to drive the C7 Corvette Stingray, which I'm thinking about picking up used, I think after a few more labs around Nurburgring I'm going to uninstall this, I woke up this morning with back-pan from all of the back and forth in and out of the racing rig cockpit every ten minutes (practice, qualify, race, have an accident, rinse and repeat).
On the plus side, good lord does this game look incredibly sharp in the Bigscreen Beyond with a 4090 (maxed out), I can run it 4xxx by 4xxxx resolution and it's miles sharper than ACC. It looks incredible.
