i have a video which shows how much faster im going than them, on that skill, the tatuus car. the cars in there are being lapped in a 20 lap race.
if you drive a bit with them, you will see how they work and maybe you can increase the skill latter.
about the gamepad controller, thats a bad choice, if you ask me.
feeling on ice usually goes with not properly set up controls, car and/or bad driving.
some cars are harder to drive.
Maybe you can find som good info regarding driving with xbox controller. If you play a lot of racing games I really recommend to buy a wheel . if you become a member on racedepartment forum you can download a lot of cool tracks and cars and mods to this racing game.. BR Carpemann
Unless you go into an event which is blatantly stacked against you, with opponents driving much faster cars than yours. The SLS AMG-series is pure hell, for instance.
I have placed 1st on many maps and still hold some records.
However I traveled north to visit my folks one summer and didnt want to drag all my fanatec gear with me so I took an XB1 controller for giggles.
Followed a couple tutorials and you know, I beat all my records that I had with a $1000 fanatec setup with a $30 controller.
Speed sensitivity: 100%
Steering speed: 18%
Steering Gamma: 390%
Steering Filter: 48%
Steering deadzone: 4%
Rumble: 100% (if you're ever feeling rumble, it's telling you you're losing grip)
Drive only easy cars in the beginning and set AI to 75%.
The easiest cars are here in order on Tiiips. Try the first four

Granted I use mouse steering and ABS on all cars
I have Logitech F310 controller and use the following:
wheel / custom
Main Controls
degrees of rotation: 1000 deg
Advanced->Steering Settings
Gamma: 2.50
Filter: 0.06
Speed Sensitivity: 0.12
Advanced->Pedal Settings
Brake Gamma: 2.40
Works quite well for me.
For cars with sensitive steering (sport cars or open wheels), I would lower the degrees of rotation, eg., to 700 deg or so.
This is not an easy game, it's very much a simulator, it takes many hours, days and even months to master.
try learning with these guys:

Every small detail of what you do with steering, brake and throttle, your gearing, when and how much brake, throttle and steering you use . . . everything matter and for each turn is from a little bit different to completely different and for different reasons.
The game is hard but because it follows more realistic physics and require you to learn better how to drive to be fast.
Setups can grant you from 1s to 2s, a max of 3s, but will not do magic of making you faster by 7s, 10s or more and in case it do make you 7s or 10s faster it just mean you are being way too slow and instead of changing setup you should have changed car.
