This isn't "popular" answer but to "test steering wheel" try LFS. It's quite old but has almost as good steering feel as AC (miles better than any codemasters game anyways). And it has a free demo!

Raceroom is great and free to play, if you like it you can then buy official cars and tracks for a couple of £ each.
However things that AC offers better is mods (more than any other sim) and offline play.
Raceroom has no mods and an internet connection is needed even for single player, but a great sim, I've raced more leagues on raceroom that anyother.
R factor and automobilista games are also great sims, similar tyre models with different base content and many mods.

I have Project Cars and 2 and wouldn't recommend either. AC is good and you have that. If you can find an old copy of NASCAR Racing Season II, GT Legions, GTR, GTR2 and American Truck Driver are all games I'd recommend. ATD is a solo game that I think now allows you to broadcast .
