Porsche 962 H gate pattern
I wonder what does the real car shift pattern? I was some videos where it seems 1st gear is at position sloser to the driver. Something like this, is it true or not? http://www.bmwmregistry.com/faq/E30_M3_Euro_Shifter.jpg

Not really sure. There's differences in 962 models as well.

My guess is they actually use up-down shifter knob: this style was common in race cars before paddle-shifters became the trend.

Here's also interesting bit:
The Porsche DoppelKupplung (PDK) double clutch gearbox was first used for racing in 1984 in a 956. Following further tests, in 1986 the 962 C, chassis 962-003, was equipped with the PDK and was even able to chalk up a victory at the Monza 360 km race.

So I think they used up/down shifter instead of H-pattern.

Apparently some cars used PDK box and others used the more traditional five-speed box.

cool detailed pictures here: http://www.speedhunters.com/2013/01/1989-porsche-962ck6-the-evolution-of-success/

I believe they typically had a 5 speed 'Dog-Leg' box, so 1st will be down and to the left, but like kazereal said, these cars were always evolving and being modified plus there's different models of the same car.

Oh I should have know, well it is just on me how I setup my shifter then since every piece was unique. But still it would be nice if they add more description how you should properly setup your equipment and how to properly drive it. This applies to all other sims too.

Sure, but there's plenty things you don't get exact same way, or at least not easily..

For example, most wheels for PC are not strong enough to match what real car needs in steering input.

In some cars reverse gear is lift->left->up (another "slot" left from first gear) where as Logitech G25 shifter is push->right->down (same slot as sixth gear). That one would need some extensive changes to the shifter to be truly correct.

There lots of things like these..

If there's ideas how to make these better in shifters I would be interested.

Btw, interesting stuff about "Sportomatic" system in 911 in the 70's:

Edit: this does mention there is dog-leg gearbox in 962C (at least in that one):

Nice articles, thanks. I know it's simulation and it will never be same as real driving but it can help to autenticity a little bit.

Yep, I get the idea, I'm same way. Unfortunately reality puts a damper on things.
