No, playing a racing simulator, with VR, and no wheel makes no sense at all, even playing with a gamepad and VR, makes no sense. VR is all about the immersion, playing with keyboard and mouse, and a gamepad kills that immersion.

Not worth it in VR without a wheel- it totally breaks the immersion using a controller for anything in VR unless the game is you sitting in a chair using a controller.

The purpose of VR is for you to feel like you are present in the world of the game- its a really big disconnect not using a wheel and a massive immersion creation when you use a wheel and pedals- especially if you have some sim-vibration feedback.

OP could maybe try the chase view...I havent tried it in AC but in PCars2 it was actually quite good fun in VR.

Seeing the wheel respond 1:1 with the movements you make on a physical wheel, combined with feeling the physical feedback of what you're seeing is, in my opinion, the most significant aspect of why VR works so well for a racing sim. It's pretty much the only genre currently that allows genuine and realistic physical feedback as standard. It connects you to what you're seeing around you in such an immersive way. Playing it any other way in VR would feel horribly disconnected I'd imagine.

If you're in VR for the immersion factor... you really need to be looking at an FFB wheel for the exact same reason. Get saving :-P

Oh gawwwwd, it's not like it's the opposite of fun just because you're in VR without a wheel. It's still more fun than most other racing games with a controller. And being in VR wouldn't make it less fun than normal.

Mouse steering is pretty good and precise enough for nuanced steering. I've been testing graphics settings and using mouse steering IN MY VR for about an hour now, because I don't want to plug in my wheel. There is a lot of fun to be had.

Sure, there'd be fun to be found. If you're into VR though, I'd say you're probably someone who values an immersive experience... and well, you can hardly dispute that you'll get a significantly more immersive experience with a wheel in VR than using a controller in VR.

Racing sims with a good wheel and a VR headset is one of the few VR experiences you can truly lose yourself completely in, and feel like you're really inside a vehicle racing. Take the wheel away, and you might not take away the fun, but you'll lose that feeling.

I'm a year late but for anyone still wondering, you can use software like DS4 to map a ps4 controllers tilt controls to turn in game, which is probably the best controls you can have without buying a wheel, not sure if the same works with an xbox controller though.

VR chase view makes even less sense. why would you ever use chase view in vr hahaha

Erm...because it's fun to try different things...you must be one of those 'I'm not very imaginative' type of people.
Chase view in VR with Project Cars 2 was actually quite good FUN in an arcadey way...As I mentioned 7 months ago...
Sitting behind an LMP around LeMans was quite exilerating...the sound of the external engine, the sparks, and a great feeling of speed that you don't get on a screen.
If you wasn't such a ♥♥♥♥ I would have suggested you try it before pointing your finger and laughing...but alas.
