Heel toe shifting with G29
Hi,

Does anybody have tips on how to improve heel toe shifting with the logitech G29? I can do it but I find it really hard to stay on the brake when I blip the gas. I'm actually quite happy with the feel of the brake pedal but yea probably an issue with my technique or seating position.

If you're good at it or you have video examples of somebody else whos good at it please let me know because it's hard to stay competetive without that skill.

have you tried moving the pedal-faces closer together between brake and throttle pedal?
Otoh, I just made my heel kick the throttle, tilting my foot almost fully horizontally back with my G25 (only G27 and newer started to offer movable pedal-faces). Get your tool(s) out :D

then again, the game allows for you to manipulate each axis-signal with inidvidual dead-zones and saturation. I would suggest you look into that.

I had no idea you could do that, thanks. I actually have an old ankle injury which doesn't like the twisting so getting the accelerator closer to the brake will help heaps

when the skill was first learnt by racing drivers all those years ago the technique was to actually use the ball and heel of the foot, for a few reasons, mainly cos of no power assisted brakes so you really had to stand on the brakes plus the distance between pedals of those old cars.

the modern technique is now more 'ball of foot, side of foot' basically you press the brake with half of the foot and sort of roll your foot across to 'blip' the throttle with the side of the foot.

as much as i wouldnt ever take driving tips from an american i couldnt be ar.sed to google for a better vid.....

and if you struggle cos of old injuries you could even go so far as to buy some 'driving foot wear' like sparco time 77. they have a thin sole so you can feel the pedals better plus extra padding at the side of the little toe to assist in reaching the throttle.

and il just quickly add that is was this game that i taught myself to heel n toe on (which i now do in real cars) so as a simulator for teaching technique assetto does the job. and if you were even slightly interested the cars i learn in first were the maserati 250F T2 12C and the bmw M3 E30 DTM cos of the long gears they just seemed easier to learn with.

anyway good luck.

Heel toe downshifting, as mentioned, is really a misnomer. For most cars you are really using the left side of your foot (essentially your big toe) on the brake and you roll the right side of your foot to blip the gas.

To break things down in stages, the first thing you should practice is simply braking with only the left side of your foot. Once you feel like you have the same feel and control with only part of your foot as all of your foot you can try rotating your foot to blip the throttle. I personally think you practice this with cars that have ABS (I run ABS if the representive car has such a system as in real life it is indefeatable). There is no sense adding the extra burden of not locking the tires while you're trying to heel toe.

One tip, is that the only thing that really matters is that the car is in the proper gear prior to turn in. A slow lazy downshift while braking makes no difference compared to a fast one. What you actually want to concentrate on is not changing the brake pressure while you are blipping the throttle as that could upset the car. Another thing to consider is whether you want to go through every gear or not. You can shift through every gear blipping the entire way or you can go through every gear and only blip when you get to the gear you want. If you don't want to go through the gears you can just go the gear you want and skip gears, it makes no difference to the transmission. Personally I go through every gear so I know what gear I'm in. In game a money shift is annoying, in reality it's something else.

Anyway, keep practicing until you can perform the downshifts by muscle memory. One reason why cars with automated transmissions can be faster than those with a traditional manual is that the driver with the automated trans has less to think about and only has to concern him/herself with hitting their marks and not minutia of the car.

I have a g290 (basically the same as yours) and when I started learning heel-toe I was watching a lot of tutorials but to be honest watching tutorials didn't help me much. If you know the theory of how to heel-toe that should be enough than it's just a lot of practice from there and eventually it will come naturally. My last bit of advice is make sure your comfortable, play with your pedal positions and if your not wearing shoes than put some on.
