I'd like to run a real championships with real time sessions but I think that it's impossible.
How to waste a wonderful simulations game!!
I am playing 1 hour practice, 15 min qualifying and then a lap count that varies depeninding on track length but that results in approx 30 min race.
Sessions can be skipped and if you quit in practice then progress is not saved. As such you are free to start a practice and if something comes up, quit without punishment. When you re-load the championship later you will be at the start of the practice again.
As you can skip sessions you could also start a practice, something come up and you have to quit. Next day start the practice again. Feel already ready to go and not need to practice and so skip session straight to qualifying.
The fact you have been unexpectedly busy has not impacted the race series as quitting without p`unishment and skip session options means you can try again later without having to go through a full session again.
When a session is over you do not have to start the next session right away and can sit in the pits in the pre-session menu waiting to launch it. So for example I have qualified and something comes up which means I cannot race right away. Thatis fiine - I leave the game on the in between session pause state and leave the PC on in game. Go away and come back later and start the race.
The progress is saved if you finish a race or if you quit mid race (you are awarded last place).
I have not tried quitting mid or post qualifying so but would imagine this fogoes your qualifying and outs you in last.
In your example you could have skipped the session right to qualifying when you went back to do it a second time. This would mean you do not do the whole practise session all over again.
When you finish the race the progress is saved.
The whole thing I was pointing out is that you do not have to do it all at once.
Do the practice session when you have time and don't do the qualifying or race. Instead close the game before you start the qualifying session. Then when you do have enough free time, launch it again and skip the practice session and go straight to qualifying and then race.
This is exactly what I do and means I have no issues with free time and get to race all I want. I'm afraid don't understand how this is preventing you from enjoying a custom championship.
I for example get in from work of an evening, launch AC and my custom championship and start the 60 min practtice session. I then go and amke a coffe, smoke a cigarette etc and come back with about 40 mins of practice left. I check the AI times and do some practise laps and see how I compare to the field. When the practice ends the game leaves me in a menu waiting to start qualifying. If I have time to do the race I qualify and race there and then and If I do not I quit and come back to the game later/another day.
When this happens (quitting after practice and coming back another day) I launch the game, load the championship and start the practice session either practising a few mins or skipping session to qualifying.
With the abilty to skip sessions etc the only time you need to set aside, is enough time to set a qualifying lap you are happy with. Once this is done you can skip to race. Then you just need enough free time to complete the race. No need to put aside the time to do a full practice, qual and race!
Edit: It does save between races. Let's say you have 2 races, p+q+r sessions, at imola and mugello: status is saved after imola and mugello.
From your description it does not save between sessions of each race (between p - q - r), but maybe it should but doesn't due to some bug (guessing).
Anyway, I would like to see locking opponent level at championship editing so it can't be changed mid-season (another bug possibly).
