Brake well before corner and accel to exit of corner. Lowering gear is good for quick cornering.
Try to be a behind stalker. You can do it.
Yeah I know boring and sometimes tedious , I have played the game almost 100 hours and I'm just getting used to the game , I'm a Racer not a mechanic and I play for fun and to enjoy the game, eventually I will get round to the setup side of things too, my advice to you would be to play the special events, you will find some of them are not so difficult, try to enjoy the game and concentrate less on winning. ( make sure AI strength is 80 )
Also set AI agression to it's lowest , make sure in a race you get the best possible start , get as close to the front of the pack before the end of the first lap, don't think your slow because they pull away from you between lap 2/3 this is very common in all racing games , if you give any AI an inch they will take a mile , this is true of pretty much all racing games, whilst playing solo.
Also it depends on what you mean by slow.?. If you don't see continual improvement in your laptimes it is possible AC is not the game for you.
Honestly it took me around 50 hours to become a challenge for the AI (Lol) at any level , don't feel bad about being slow, a lot of these young players these days use mods download setup configs etc etc, cause they aint so fast either Lol

Correct PSI, tire temperature & alignment play a large role in cornering performance. It's mostly about getting the car ready to race.
Also driving like in real life result slower time. Simulator is based on math & try to somehow simulate driving without being authentic with the driving input. Basically all you have to think is to decelerate before the apex & accelerate after the apex while following the ideal racing line.

The problem on console, it doesn't the show optimal psi by color, but you can always browse on youtube for a particular car & find the ideal pressure.
