How could a rally car not have a handbreak?

That is fking strange :D i mean, on Dirt Rally it has one, in Reallife i think it also has one... thats a bit sad if im honest

Did a google search and someone said back then they didnt have a way of unlocking the differentials when the handbrake was used on a AWD car

Dirt rally has one. Yea u should ask them why they added the hand brake My guess is it was added to make the Audi competative with the cars that have a handbrake.

In the real Audi however...

No handbrake at all. Central diff can't open when handbrake is pulled, so even if you can put a hydraulic handbrake, strong enough, then it would lock all 4 wheels... so no handbrake. Scandinavian flick is your friend.

Thats really surprising! Then i guess i have to say sorry to Kunos (i was surprised anyway, they are so detailed with their cars, so i was really "shocked" when i saw no handbrake^^).
But thanks to Fatty McGassy and Nakadi!

There is still something i wonder, what did they do if there was a really tight hairpin? the flick would have been to slow i guess...

Anyway, pretty interesting!

None of the 4WD Group B rally cars had handbrake. It was the tech of the time that had the limitation.

I'm not 100% sure what was used in the S1, but Torsen center differential was used in some road-going "civilian" cars: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torsen

In the early stages of Group B there were RWD cars such as Lancia 037 that did have handbrake, just the 4WD ones didn't.

Looks like they had 100% locked center differential initially and had Torsen center differential later ('85 onwards).
https://rallygroupbshrine.org/the-group-b-cars/rally-cars/audi-sport-quattro-s1-homologation-version/

Anyway, since engine was so far forward it had understeer and only way to drive it was "flat out" or "maximum attack".

I wonder what this thing in the Audi is that you can see when you go to F6 inside view. Look between the seats. What is that? It looks like a handbrake that is connected somehow...
Any idea? It looks like it is functional

its like a transbreak that holds a drag car on the line whilst at full chat, they used it at the start of a rally to spool the turbo up to full before the car was released
