what is the 'best' way to START AC in VR ?
When I first got my rift (about 4-5 months ago) it all went so smoothly... start up steam, pick up headset, oculus would automatically start (motion/light sensors triggered) then choose steam VR then 'play' AC, press ok (confirmation box); loading (oculus/stream/AC handshakes etc) then I was in. I'd also had reasonable success a couple of weeks in starting in Virtual Desktop (after firing up steam of course). By in large wheel settings (Fanatec CSW V2+CSP V2+Universal hub) would keep and I usually could just slip into hotlapping the most resent F1 Scudera and I was a happy chappie..was :(
Now it is rare that I can get ANY VR facetime.... the handshakes often don't work, wheel settings (and attempted recalibrations) dont always stick (make the slightest solitary change to the button lay out and you get this nagging feeling that you have to go through the WHOLE wheel configuration procedure AGAIN- which to be honest is a pain to do with a headset on when you have to double check your wheel is at 90deg with one hand peeking under the rift, the other straing against seemingly 100% centre gain strength; program locks up and I either cnrl+alt+del outta there or if I'm especially short fused I'll just power cycle the whole pc (not good I know!)
I'm just tired of it all.
Fatigued by how much time wasting there is (for me) to make it work, let alone smoothly. Maybe I've reached the uppermost limits of faffing about and I should just go get a go-kart (need to loose at least 30 kgs 1st :0) or just keep playing GTA5. Every time I look at the AC discussion page the HTC Vive VR for AC thread (or an iteration of it) is there to remind me of 'how ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lucky I am' to have all the right stuff to play it; yet it seems like a chore. Today for example I tried 5 or 6 times; each time either it wouldnt respond; or I sat in pitlane motionless wanting to mash my head into the windscreen.
PLEASE MAKE THIS AVAILABLE TO Vivers.... why should we (I speak at least for mysel) have all the frustration ??? *

*referencing the joke about marriage equality and how gays shouldn't be spared the joys of divorce either (just a joke ppl)

And for the earnest and optimistic who will genuinly attempt to narrow down why I'm so far down this rabbit hole, my specs are fine (i5 4590,GTX 980ti, windows 10, 16GB RAM etc; my drivers are upto date etc.

I'm worried that as I get older my tolerences are rapidly evaporating. Please lord, dont let me turn into a shorter and ALOT poorer version of Jeremy Clarkson of the sim world....PLEASE !!!

I am using Assetto Corsa in VR with my Vive every day, and it only takes a minute or two to setup and get into a session. I cant tell you how to start a VR driving session with a Rift, but it should not be more difficult than it is for me with a Vive using Oculus Home, Revive and Steam.

I hope a rift owner can give you some advice, as I believe this should be an easy thing to get running propperly.

Don't go through Steam VR. (dont work and it's a bloated program anyway) You should be starting the game and using pre race ui on your monitor and not seeing in VR till you get to a track-after clicking the start button to race..

You wouldn't put your helmet on to drive to the race so it is imo more realistic anyway. I only want the rift on when i'm driving. I wish I could choose to do car setup and pre race chat on my monitor.
You're going to have to clarify.

Are you using Rift? Then just load Assetto Corsa, select Oculus Rift mode from the display under video options and then load up a race or whatever and when it loads on to the track, only then will the game display in the Rift not before- the main menu is only shown on your monitor. Ignore SteamVR- AC has the Oculus Runtime and does not need SteamVR.

If you have an HTC Vive, then its the same but you install and patch in the third-party software known as ReVive- according to its install instructions- and that just wraps Rifts HMD data through to SteamVR so you can use it with the Vive.

Thats all you need do.
just like the others have said, ignore steam vr, thats for vive users.

just a simple check list to make sure you got everything set up right.

in your oculus store options find the option that says something like 'allow 3rd party apps to use oculus' and tick it.

have your oculus store open in the background, just minimize it.

start AC like you would any normal steam game (double click assetto corsa in your games list)

in the options find the resolution and set it to 'oculus early support' (or whatever it says)

untick vsync (very important that one, it locks your rift to 60fps if you leave it checked)

find a car and track of your choice and click 'drive' your rift should now fire up once AC has loaded the car and track.

as for your controls seeming to bum you all the time, if you unplug any usb from your pc (especially game pads and wheels and such) then it will reset all your keybindings on AC, i dont know why and yes its annoying as fk but it is what it is, AC is an awesome simulator but pretty much every other aspect of the game is a bit sh!t. maybe thats why it keeps bumming you but wither way you dont need to run the wizard everytime, just 'click to assign' each input should be enough to sort it.

then once you got it all set up right you will need to mess about with graphics options to make sure you hit the target 90fps but thats not as important as just getting it working.

anyway if all thats as clear as mud and you still cant get it set up right then just add me and il help you sort it.
1. Start Oculus Home
2. Start Assetto Corsa
3. Wait for it to load up...
4*. Click through the menu
5. Select Car and Track
6. Move mouse over Start button
7**. Put on Oculus Rift
8***. Click left mouse button
9. Position oneself straight while it loads
10. Once loaded, use mouse to start or setup car
11. Drive

* At this stage, we assumes you setup Assetto Corsa to work with the Oculus Rift via the option menu; others already mention how-to or google it
** If you just started Oculus Home then once you go in, you will have to look at the button at the bottom of the Health and Safety notice
*** Use the expose nose gap on the Rift to navigate

Other note is that I own a Logitech K400 wireless keyboard so makes getting at a keyboard and mouse easier because it has a built in mousepad. Also using ALT+F4 makes it quick to exit a session. Once I exit the session I tend to just use purely the expose nose gap to navigate the menu to choose cars and tracks because I wear glasses and its usually a bit more tedious to get in and out so I've grown acustom to using the nose gap for the most part.

Hope that give you some insight to make it best suit you :D

Edit: Also if you need to reposition yourself, press CTRL+SPACE
