Achievement bugs & solutions (v1.1.3)

This is a list of all achievement bugs I encountered and read about on the Bit Blot forums, as well as solutions to some of them. Should you find additional bugs or solutions, leave a message and save a kitten! :)

Note: This post is 99% spoiler-free. Minor references to game secrets and unlockables exist.

Achievements staying locked

Speed Racer
Beat the Arnassi race in less than a minute.

Bug: The achievement won't unlock after beating the race in less than a minute (0:59 or less).

Possible solution: Load a save in which you haven't yet attempted the race. Beat the race in 0:59 or less. If you fail, reload the save before attempting again.
Reports seem to suggest that restarting the entire game might be necessary instead of just loading the save, this seems to be a consistent solution. Possibly it's enough to quit to the main menu and load from there.

Explorer
Travel to all the areas of Aquaria.

Bug: The achievement won't unlock after visiting all areas of Aquaria.

Note: If you're having trouble with this one, it's more likely you missed an area (there are a lot of secrets in this game!). This will most often be the last achievement you unlock.
Basically, if you've:
- Collected all treasure items.
- Collected 4 pets.
- Learned 10 songs (shown in menu).
- Found 3 lost memories.
- Collected 5 Verse Eggs.
- Unlocked the 3rd cooking slot.
- Found the two Weird Fish.
- Entered the final area (completion isn't necessary).
and the achievement isn't unlocked, it's likely a bug.

Solution: This is technically cheating, but Alphasoldier on the Bit Blot forums has shared a 100% completed save which you can copy to /Steam/SteamApps/common/Aquaria/save (this will overwrite save slot #32, make a backup if necessary!). You will receive the Explorer achievement upon loading this save, and possibly every other achievement in the game (unconfirmed, but I think most or all will be unlocked), only use this as a last resort!

Achievements not staying locked

Some achievements are unlocked prematurely, before completing the listed requirement(s). While there appears to be no solution to this problem at present, it shouldn't bother most people as you can legitimately complete the objective afterwards and not feel guilty for receiving free achievements.

Combo Eater
Devour 6 creatues in a row.

Bug: Apparently, the achievement unlocks after devouring a total of 6 creatures, not 6 creatures in a row.

Boom Shrimp
Defeat the Mantis Shrimp.

Bug: The achievement unlocks after defeating the Rock Crab (along with Rock Crab Rocked).

Uniter
Rescue all the lost souls.

Bug: The achievement unlocks upon rescuing 3 souls instead of 4.

I recevied the Boom Shrimp achievement prematurely, now when I encounter the Mantis Shrimp it refuses to drop when shot with the nature form seed. Does anyone else have this problem?

I don't think Steam achievements affect gameplay and the Boom Shrimp achievement seems to have been bugged since day one.

Boss fight spoilers ahead:
Just to clarify, you need to use the charged Nature Form attack and it needs to stick to the wall above the Mantis Shrimp. It's been a while since I played, but I think it might have a range limit and won't work if you're too low (upper half of the topmost bubble should work).

I don't think Steam achievements affect gameplay and the Boom Shrimp achievement seems to have been bugged since day one.

i have explorer achievement but no mass-transit achievement, i dont know if its bugged or something, its the ach about unlock all the sea turtles

Shouldn't be bugged, unlocked fine for me.

IIRC (and I may be completely wrong, it's been a long time since I played Aquaria), you need to "unlock" each of the sea turtles by touching them. If they appear on the map, you've unlocked them. I'm not sure about the exact criteria of Explorer vs. Mass Transit, but I'll just guess Occam's razor-style that you missed one or more sea turtles.

Spoilers ahead

There should be a total of 9 Ancient Sea Turtles, in the following locations:
1. Home Waters
2. Open Waters
3. Kelp Forest
4. The Veil
5. The Veil (after Sun Temple)
6. The Abyss
7. The Body, at the very end, before the final boss (colloquially named The Heart)
8. One Secret Ancient Sea Turtle in the Arnassi Ruins which leads to...
9. Another Secret Ancient Sea Turtle in Kelp Forest

I hope I didn't miss any, this is according to Jester's comprehensive walkthrough on GameFAQs[www.gamefaqs.com] and a annotated world map on Aquaria wiki[aquaria.wikia.com].

Possible solution for Speed Racer (how it worked for me)

Bug:
Beat the race with 0:59 after a few tries (including one "wrong way" warning).
Didn't get the achievement.

Possible solution:
Quit the game.
Start it again and load your file.
Beat the race in 0:47 (using Royal Soup this time) on my first try and got the achievement.

Notes:
It may be that the time was too close, maybe a bit over in some intern calculations.
Maybe the "wrong way" locked the achievement.
Maybe beating the record on the same game session locked the achievement.
Maybe you can only get it on the first try (after entering the area? after starting the game?)

For the Explorer achivement, another area that people miss is a 4th save point inside the Energy Temple. I was missing this one[i.imgur.com] and finally unlocked the achievement once I went there.

found out the hard way that you need to restart the game and beat the race with 0:59 or less time at your very first attempt in the game session for this achievement to register. can't confirm that quitting to main menu and loading again works. simple reloading to earlier save doesn't help.
