Homeworld Remaster is like playing Homeworld 2 in Homeworld with the original storyline
Homeworld 2? Given that "Remastered" is basically a patched version of the HW2C engine ... play HW2R.
Prior to the release of this remaster, I had only ever played Homeworld 2. I had issues with HW1C but I didn't know any better and found HW1C unapproachable ... until the past year or so when I decided to push myself to do it ... glad I did. "OMG THE SPHERE FORMATION ACTUALLY WORKS!!!" (among other things)
to restate:
HW1C
HW2R
. . . Usual Hyperbole
Thanks, i shall give the formations a try
so far i only feel they get in the way, so i just use control groups and free formations...

actual pure scum right here
imo karak was the best game among them, both homeworlds were super super slow to the point it was boring...
Homeworld 2 automatically collecting resources is a slight glimpse of hope that devs actually played the game and realised, you know what hanging out for extra 30 minutes every mission to collect everything on map when there are no enemies is kinda not fun...
Among other not fun things is :
1. No ability to speed up passage of time, again, games pace is super slow... sometimes i would go grab a coffee while i scheduled all the production and commands i needed...
2. Stupidity of the AI... it has no logic throwing its units into exact counters of mine.
3. Controls were glitching in homeworld 1,2 remastered, some units would ignore the order after some time, i had to micromanage and force them to do what i actually want them to do... for example i want my capital ships to stay stationary but hit anything within range, mo matter what tactic i select they would either not fire or chase every stupid thing on the map...
4. This is subjective because some of you find formations very powerful, i found exact opposite, formations made most of the units idle... so if the target moves behind formation, every ship now tries to turn to hit it... rather than free fire where everything will fire more frequently and move freely... i just didnt see any benefit to formations.
STILL with all of this karak and homeworld 1,2 were great games and i'm looking for HW3...
I just wish Karak had a decent hard AI so i could play with other factions and just have some fun after the main campaign.
It's sold on GOG but unfortunately not on STEAM.
i didnt know about Homeworld Emergence, will give it a try for sure.
are there any other games like homeworld? that you like/know?
Ye, formations are extremely powerful, especially in HW1C and HW1 Cataclysm/Emergence
And also ye, DoK's horrific skirmish AI is a travesty ... "let us build nothing but railguns!"
Homeworld Emergence was done by another developer and it's a side story to the main lore.
On GOG is often on sale up to 90% and while been an old game works fine on Win10.

There's a thread here for games similar to Homeworld worth checking out:

I think if homeworld could really up the replay value if it had some sort of RPG elements.
Like you get to start in few different systems (which feel/look differently)... and you can choose different paths like FTL, depending on your paths you will find different rewards/amount of resources on the map (resources should be scarce enough) and you basically want to reach some specific destination building up your fleet and upgrades as you go... they could absolutely take some ideas from FTL like different motherships that unlock over time... all suitable to give you some fighting capability... homeworld 2 had module system for carriers same can be used on motherships to outfit them with different weapons/engines/modules...
There are so many things you can do with such a game, its a shame they currently have nothing that would let you keep playing the game after you finished the campaign.

Sadly not many games had the same allure that Homeworld has - but 'Sins of a Solar Empire' is another one that let you build and expand your galactic empire, not much of a story but good gameplay mechanics.
Also to keep an eye on 'Capital Command', 'Fragile Existence', and 'Dune: Spice Wars' (same developer as Northgard that is at the moment in EA.
Lastly I would also recommend 'Nexus: The Jupiter Incident' as a little gem of a game.
