Very Difficult Mission 3
Recently bought Homeworld Remastered and have been playing the single player campaign. Msn 3 seems impossible. Every time I it starts, the cryo trays are under immediate attack by 10 Assault Frigates. My forces include 7 Salvage Corvettes, 4 Light Corvettes, 2 Scouts, and 24 Heavy Corvettes. By the time my forces get to the cryo trays, 3 are almost destroyed and 2 of the others are damaged. Only 1 is fully intact and the enemy uses 5 frigates to attack the salvage corvette that is retrieving it. In Msn 2, I successfully accomplished all objectives. Any hints or shortcuts that I'm missing?

Keep in mind the larger your fleet, the larger the enemies fleet will be. I beat this mission with just 6 salvage ships and 2 squads of scouts. There were just 2 attacking frigates and I captured them first while my scouts were drawing their fire.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try that.

There is a mod to disable this blullshit scalling

Yep, the scaling is anoing as f* in H1. The game was not desinged for it intialy so it may cause problems by having too many enemy ships in missions. Both in gameplay and performance. Before moving to another mission I always recycled most of my strike crafts, all when I had decent fleet of capital ships and before moving to mission 3 (gone mad with it initialy too...), except salvage corvetes.
The only mission where scaling is usefull, is mission with the Ghost Ship - capturing capital ships controled by distorsion field. Mission 9 if I remember correctly.

I really appreciate the advice. I used your tactic and it worked great.

Yeah, that bit with all the frigates is a design oversight. It did NOT happen in the original homeworld. Simply put, they added in campaign scaling for homeworld 1, and put no upper limit on it.

I would download the 2.3 players patch and play with that in order to outright remove the scaling. Punishing the players for doing well, and preparing a lot of ships beforehand is horrible design.

wouldn't removing scaling take all the challenge out of the game?

In HW1, not really. The game strongly emphasis resource management early game, and more often than not players have no clue what to expect or prepare for.

In HW2, yes, for the second half of the game only. Since Hw2 resources are much more plentiful, and you are encourage to build all you can from the get-go.

I would add that in H2, you collect all resources when completing mission automaticaly. In H1, you had to manualy jump out of mission and by doing so, you could loose precious resources.

Just to kind of double check, does it take into account your starting ships for that level, or does it also take into account everytime you build a ship, it builds more to counteract as such.

Normally I would build up fleets of ships before jumping, but it sounds like I am better off scrapping as many ships as possible before jumping, then rebuilding them once I have jumped. Is that right?

There is a mod where you can adjust scalling

It pops in more ships upon starting the level. Once started, there are no differences in enemy build speeds if they have building capability at all, so scrapping/jumping/rebuilding is perfectly viable.

How you get the resources to research and build 24 Heavy Corvettes until the end of mission 2!? Even when I wouldn't loose any ships I would not have enought. Is there a hiden ressource field?

Regardless, for mission 3 and 4 abuse salvage corvettes. Use them to not only quickly disable frigates, but also turn them to your side. Pretty much required for mission 4.

Sorry about not replying earlier. I was immersed in the game. I used salvage corvettes to capture enemy corvettes and then re-cycled their RUs into more heavy corvettes. Until Sabaithal and others told me about the scaling and using salvage corvettes in Mission 3, I kept playing Msn 2 and kept optimizing RUs and captures by salvage corvettes to build ever bigger heavy corvette numbers. The scaling kept beating me. In Msn 3, the secret is to have a small combat fleet and plenty of salvage corvettes to overwhelm a smaller (from scaling) number of enemy assault frigates while having a few more salvagers to grap the cryo units. thanks
