Still no resolution to High VRAM usage after one race (update 5 problems)
System specs:
5800x3d
3080ti
2x samsung 1TB m.2 drives
64G ram

I have tried reinstalling the graphics driver
Clearing shader cache
verifying install files
Deleting game cache
Vsync through Nvidia
Vsync through motorsport
Unlimited shader cache
Driver default shader cache

Dlss on in every configuration
Dlss off

and still, after the first race, I get +/- 20fps.

I have opened a help ticket, but have gotten no response (other than the automated email)
Posted it on forza.net under the "report new bugs" tab (where it promptly got buried)

Has anyone found a fix for this yet?

I am amazed since launch that there are people who manage to run this game on 10-12GB cards above 1080p. The textures are straight out of Fortnite but at 1440p and 150% resolution the game easily goes to 13GB VRAM... Atrocious. I don't know why AAA games suddenly started using more VRAM than RAM...
This latest patch cranked up the VRAM usage even higher. I swear, almost every new game has VRAM leak. I remember the days games had RAM leaks but RAM is cheap and upgrade-able. VRAM isn't...It needs to be optimized

I think I might have found a fix. I am going to try running a few races and let y'all know how it works out.

I went through and messed with each setting individually under the graphics tab, ran one race, and then performed a benchmark.
Nothing made much of a difference until I got to the livery quality. It didn't change much but it did improve from 20fps to 29-30fps. I then turned drivatar liveries off, and I am now getting 60fps after running one race, but testing is pretty difficult, as I am also now encountering a bug where the post race screen never loads, and I have a pitch black screen that doesn't go away until I quit the application.

Don't know if this is related. or an all new error. But I sure do know it's frustrating.

Absolutely pointless to continue trying. I went from one black screen soft lock every few races to it now occurring after every single race.

I sure wish I could break my money after the fact like they have this game.

I was able to fix it by setting FPS to 60 (no v-sync)

I tried this, and no improvement the first time.

Out of frustration i set everything back to default, and it started working (quasi) normally.

I went through and changed some of the settings back to where I had them to see which one was causing the issue, got to the performance target and setting it to 30 or 60 caused no issues (still worked), however setting it to unlocked caused the black screen to reappear.
Dlss turned on with the fps locked to 60 also got me the black screen.
resolution scale at less than 100 got me the black screen, but above 100 caused stutters.
turning on drivatar liveries at all resulted in 20fps after the first race again.

I found settings that work and look good but they don't make sense.
I currently have dlss on quality, performance target to 60, ray tracing to full, rt quality to medium, everything else to ultra or high- and it somehow works now without stuttering at a steady 60fps.

There is something seriously bugged in the code of this game. aside from dlss being on quality, every setting is currently the same of higher than where I had it to start with.

I'm just glad it's working for now.

I have the same problem, man i hate this game...
timothy_gammey Feb 16, 2024 @ 7:29pm
yes. lol I think I have spent more time restarting it these last few days than playing.
The M.2 that it's on is not compressed.

and yes the infinite black screen (not sure if it qualifies as a "loading" screen, as I wasn't even getting "the circle of endless entertainment" in the corner- just went to black, and that's it)

With a RTX 3080, prior to update 5 I was playing this game in 4K with all settings on ultra except ray tracing (full - medium) and shadows (high), this would hold solid until the notorious random frame drop after 2-3 races. After update 5 my VRAM is suddenly cranked into the redzone and I'm getting 20-25fps with the exact same graphics settings. This is ridiculous.

I've noticed a couple new issues I never had before, like tracks taking forever to load and also getting stuck in the screen where you adjust fuel and tires.

Sometimes I would have trouble in that screen before update 5 and the game would say "updating" an estimate of how many laps you might get. Now it won't let me out of the screen if it says "updating".

I disabled drivatar liveries, but I noticed that sometimes the setting won't stay off and sometimes it loads their liveries while driving, which is highly annoying.

The drivatar liveries turning back on is because of there being a separate setting in free play events that overrides the settinig the gameplay/ui tab. When you're setting up a free play event, be sure to scroll to turn them off (you have to do it every time you restart the application- yay.).

I think the few stutter I still get are being caused by poor cpu optimization. Loading into the first race I run after starting the game, about 15-20 seconds in, I will get a dip from 60 to 48fps for about a half a second, after which it recovers and never happens again (until I restart the game).

I turned down raytracing not so much because of performance, but because I couldn't really tell the difference between medium and ultra. It might be my screen, or my eyesight, but to me high and medium look identical, and ultra looks the same, but with the occasional stutter- so I just turned it to the lowest setting that still looked good to my eyes.

I don't generally run raytracing in games, but if I turn it off in Forza, I start getting the "infinite loading screen" after freeplay races, and about 30% of the time in career mode. I have no idea why this has an effect, because to me, this should be the opposite of helpful- but I haven't had a soft lock since turning on RT.

Next update will likely screw with everything all over again, looking forward to messing with settings for a week to make the game function again lol.

might be a little gremlin hanging abouts from update 4

your issues sounds like networking to their servers to save your settings or car xp
are you Running forza_steamworks_release_final.exe as ADMIN
hope your not wifi gaming

perhaps report that bug to forza.net as its quite similar to update 1 infinite loading screens when playing with tyres or fuel

also try reset to default on graphic settings and see if you can tweak the graphics to reduce to the load time and keep it at 60 FPS for this update (something a little lower than pre patch ) if 60fps + Drivatar liveries OFF doesnt stabilize
Does the config file get generated after setting to default? I can't find that file on my system.

I do have it locked to 60, I just did it with the NVIDIA control panel (under global- the big screen I use for a monitor does NOT like higher frame rates lol- so I have to limit everything)

When I try to do it in game, (disabled in NVIDIA when I try this), i start getting some stutters in the benchmark (30-40, not horrible, mostly unnoticeable, but they are there).
No difference in behavior if I use 60fps or 60 Vsync- still get the odd stutter during the benchmark. If I do the FPS limit and Vsync through NVIDIA I don't get stuttering during gameplay or during the benchmark- but will get the odd stutter in the menus (something that doesn't happen with the vsync/ fps limit done in game)

I went with the NVIDIA option because I don't need any help sucking at driving lol.

Wasn't able to find the cache folder in game pass version. Found the Microsoft.ForzaMotorsport directory and there's a local cache folder, but I'm afraid to delete it since it has a lot of sub folders.

Why not just delete them but don't empty your trashcan "bin" whatever it's called in the english version of windows? If you start the game and everything works right, then you can just delete it for good.
