What AI difficulty level?
What AI difficulty level are you playing against in the builders series? I'm on 5 and can often win by a couple of seconds or at least generally always get podium but level 6 difficulty I end up being 5+ seconds behind the leader and struggle to get past 5th. Generally the case in different series/cars etc.

Curious what you are all experiencing?

I started on 4 because I was trying to dial in my graphics settings, but because I'm at the point where I can start 24th and finish first by a few seconds (with no time penalties) I think it's time for me to go up to 5.

I felt the same way going from 4 to 5 but now I can beat 5 pretty comfortably so I guess it's time to go to 6

I just cranked it up from 1 to max because I was almost lapping the entire group. I'm not sure exactly what's going on but the first group is so far ahead of me that I think they're getting some unrealistic speed buff, I'm going to crank it down to 5 and see how that goes.

The AI in Horizon frequently cheats with adamantium brakes and FTL acceleration, curious if this one does too

Started on 4. Seemed easy. Every car on the track was a joke. I was prepared to turn it up because I was winning quite comfortably from the back of the grid. That was until soon after when I got one race where it was seemingly impossible to not lose seconds to the front runner with every lap. The difference was almost freakish compared to any previous race.

After tons of experience with that track, with that car and still failing, I eventually caved and dropped it to 3. This made me win that race and every other by 20-30 seconds.

I was hoping that I could find a place where I would have to fight for my wins. But it feels more like the difficulty can only ever fall on one of two extremes.

2022 Subaru BRZ upgraded to PI 595 (I think a ballast was installed to get it back into Class B). Used it for the Track Days Featured series.

I have exactly the same problem!
My 'solution' isn't great: I stayed at 5, but I pick a much lower grid place for the actual race. Then I hope I haven't bit off more than I can chew. As I truly suck on a few tracks it kinda balances out.
Unless! It's wet. Because it appears the AI are unrealistically slow. Then 5 for practice, 6 for the race.

If you absolutely must win every race so you don't feel bad, 5. Anything above that, expect situations where you won't be winning depending on race circumstances. Just like in real life, sometimes someone gets so far out in front it's not realistic to take 1st, so you start doing the real racing things of racing your own race inside the pack for whatever position you can realistically obtain.

I play on 5, not tried higher yet but the returns are small so play what suits you.

I jumped in straight with 8 as I'm a cocky little turd, it's the same thing every race with a large gap ahead and behind so I'm tempted to try 7 and hopefully battle with P1/P2 instead of being on my own.

The AI seem much slower on lap 1 which is frustrating me as well.

rubber banding, same as motorfest.

I've noticed this too. All the crashing and bunching up makes it easy to jump ahead of the pack on the first lap.
For me it doesn't matter what standard the AI is at, they're garbage all round.
Sideswiping you as you pass then with nothing on the opposite side.
Brake testing you on straights with no reason.
Rear ending you as if you're not even there after making a clean pass.

Worse still is that when you DO pass them they'll end up practically giving up and leaving you to romp off into the distance to the point after 5 laps you're starting to lap the tail end of the field...
E.G. AMS2 AI @ 100% and max aggression.

Forza Motorsport AI at maximum settings same car and track

How is it that AMS2 can be ultra sharp in it's detail, whilst FM makes me feel my eyes need to be tested cause everything is blurred to DEATH. Despite turning off motion blur completely.
For example:
The circuit name only appears at 2 seconds from the line.
In AMS2 you can SEE there's text from the final corner exit and read it from 5 seconds away.
The LOD updates are far FAR too close to the car like the trees that actually change colour 50 yards ahead of you.
The armco barriers that change from white to black and back again at roughly the same distance in front of you.
In AMS2 I get anywhere between 180-300fps with pin sharp visuals and 2D trees that look more realistic than the amorphous 3D blobs that change colour and I get just 50-60fps and such crap visuals...

Thing is I LOVE the game.. It just needs a HELL of a lot of work before it'll be CLOSE to being a top tier racing game both visually and for gameplay...

5, 6 is more based on individual car upgrades while AI have optimal setup.
