This game is no different. Unless you think doing arbitrary races, with arbitrary cars and classes to potentially unlock something you might find enjoyable later a logical way to spend your time. (It is not.)
FOMO? Who knows? I wouldn't look at that stuff. I advise against it. And I advise against wasting time on this game's "career" which has nothing to do with anything grounded in reality and only serves to give you your corporate curated dose of car culture propaganda.
If you like driving, then free play is where it is at. If you want achievements and stuff, then probably not.
If you are looking for a career as good as the old games, you WILL be disappointed.
Most people play games for the career/story mode. I played enough weekly events in FH5 to know that multiplayer is out of the question. Free play comes after Career.
Rumour has it that there are people who don't play multiplayer. I hate multiplayer with every fibre of my being and won't touch it.
There are basically just lots of different racing event things you join and build up money and car points and also unlock other race events.
If you are after a story type career then its probably Forza Horizon you want to check out.
What else am I supposed to do? Play online?
Also, NFS Unbound's campaign was pretty good. I hear GRID Legends is great too. Racing game careers are not dead.
