Forza Motorsport Steam Deck
Hello all friends, when I bought FM on day one, it would not start on my Steam Deck. I recently sold my Steam Deck but I regretted it and am thinking of buying it again. I was thinking, how is the situation today? does the game start? and if the answer is yes is it playable?

No, it still doesnt work. It used to work if you installed windows 10 on the deck but now that doesnt even work. That said, if you were looking to play singleplayer you can emulate FM 2 and FM4 on the deck. Also, gran turismo 1-4 are playable via emulation as well. If you really want to play FM (and some other games that cant be run via steamOS) get the ROG Ally or the Lenovo Legion GO

I returned the Legion Go and am waiting for a refund. I don't know if mine was a defective part, but the menus didn't always work or were very slow, FM started once and gave various errors 4 times, it was impossible for me to change the resolution otherwise the game would crash. In short, I'm a computer scientist, for me this is bread and butter, but finding all this also in Handheld after maybe a whole day of work and study, I needed an immediate machine that would let me play without thinking about Windows, so I was re-evaluating whether to get the Steam Deck again, but I thought that after some time Valve had found the solution

Yeah, I never actually used the legion go or ally but thought they could handle it. Unfortunately Valve is unable to do anything about compatibility with this game. It's up to T10 to allow various dependencies on Linux. I think it's important to note that the game also isnt playable on Windows due to the gpu after update 3. So they'd have to fix that too.
It’s perfectly playable in the GPD Win4 with AMD 6800u (rock solid stability, but only up to 1080p@45 fps if you care about battery life). The latest version (8840u SoC) can reach 1080p@60fps, but has a lot of GPU timeouts, and is not very playable ( you can do most of races but some rivals or test-drive scenarios causes a CTD).
On another hand my laptop with 2080 RTX never had issues with this game…

but then you confirm to me that Forza Motorsport on Steam Deck still doesn't even start?
To my knowledge, last I saw it running in SD it was run only in Windows and very poorly. It seems it still won’t start on Proton.

The game can't be fixed by Valve since FM relies on Microsoft Gaming Services, which can only be downloaded from the Microsoft Store. Essentially, this is an issue Turn 10 has to fix, if anyone.

Easiest way for them to fix this is by distributing Gaming Services and other required components as part of the game somewhere in its folder structure.
Microsoft Studios should make this game work on deck like the FH4 or 5 .... :steambored:
the portable devices will always struggle with modern games due to the shared memory and pitiful shader count.

768 is like what the now ancient gtx 760m had and also other low end mobile gpu's.

until they can engineer desktop level graphics performance on a small device that is not expensive a f, they will continue to perform badly.

unless it's an old game with low requirements.

They do distribute an installer for gaming services but it won't run via Proton. Not sure how Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and Halo MCC run just fine as they both rely on gaming services. Maybe the Steam "first run" install script just needs to be updated.
For Steamdeck, I would actually recommend playing Automobilista 2 instead. I can get 60 fps with a smaller field of cars and it scratches that sim/simcade circuit racing itch.
