is this game online only or can you play offline single player career also?

There is a Singleplayer "Career, which is just a bunch of AI races put together.
You can also create your own customer AI races.
However, you need internet connection regardless if you play Online or not.

It appears I misled you slightly according to this:

The free play races could be done offline but judging by this official post, not the Career, because it's tracking progress I guess (and timed with expiring events and rewards)
