Since you have played in VR, do you see more pixels than on your 2D TV&monitor even at higher resolutions? Could that be, because the screen is 1 inch from your eyes? Now how would that translate when the base mirror resolution in game doesn't even go to 1080p? How would a 720p or 480p image look like in VR? You tell me, I have never played in VR, right...
