The problem is, as far as I know, there is no way to fix that error for good. At least, not for me.
See this thread and you can try what was covered here, if you wish :

There are many that get that error and as far as I know, there has never been a permanent solution to solve it. I have searched for a long time, and played this game for years, on different operating systems, and I still get the error after a few battles.
I can only suggest to manual save before each battle, or use the game's autosave feature to load between crashes.
I am sorry, but that's the best advice I can give. You can try the .exe edit covered in that other thraed, but for me, that only seems to help some, and does not fix the error for good.
To anyone interested, it seems there is a way to fix this game, but sadly, it appears that the way to do that is to have the game on GOG as their games are DRM free and allow the modification of files to make the .exe of King Arthur large address aware.
This thread explains all :

I can confirm that I purchased the complete King Arthur package on GoG and tested that method all weekend here and had not one single crash. It was amazing.
Now I understand that is not a great solution, as we have bought the game on Steam, but I did not mind buying it again on GoG as this is one of my most favorite games of all time, except for the crashes.
Now, I can enjoy my game without those crashes. Thanks and I was just posting this here in case anyone was interested.
I can 100% validate what The Giving One just said. I was having the exact same problem, bought the King Arthur Collection on GOG and did the fix in the above thread. Have not had a single crash since and have been playing it for 10 hours.
I just wanted to reply and say that I am so very happy that the fix worked for you also, and that you found a way to fix it. Thanks for passing this good news along !
Good job !
