Sound Issues Status

I think this game is a masterpiece and I'd like to replay it. However the sound constantly glitches and basically doesn't work at all. My machine is above spec (Mac). Was there ever patches or updates to the game to fix the sound problems that so many were having? I have a version from 5 years ago from GOG and am wondering if it's worth buying it again from Steam.
