How to get this running on OSX?
I read today about the fan-patched Daikatana 1.3 that has OSX support.

I own the game on Steam, but I can't download the files to my Mac because it's a windows game?

How to get this working?

You use SteamCMD to download the Windows binaries and then apply the Daikatana 1.3 community patch's macOS X version which contains the native 32-bit macOS X binaries. I'll link you to more accurate instructions. Also if you cannot get SteamCMD up and running, since you own the game at Steam I don't think it's a big issue if you just download the game off from 3rd party source. Downloading from GOG would be preferable in any case since it's DRM free.

Daikatana 1.3 community patch macOS X version:

SteamCMD for macOS X:

Patch 1.3 install instructions for macOS X:

If you have issues then write me back and I'll try to help you. My mac is broken but I might still be able to aid you since most of these instructions apply to Linux as well.

Edit: Oh, and since it's inevitable that you're going to be wondering "wtf is the deal with this game"... Please, try to read little bit about how to play Daikatana before you start playing it. I have an outdated guide for that here:

Notable updates I should change is that in current 1.3 version the brightness isn't an issue any longer and should be fine by default, also many other issues I've documented have been long since fixed. So you need to use your own judgement on somethings.

Probably the most useful things for you are my keybind recommendations and such things.

I tried my hand at SteamCMD but couldn't get it to work, turned out I could copy the data over from my PC and it works without a problem. Noice.

P.s.: I don't suppose there's gamepad support?

Ok, it's good to hear that you got the game data issue sorted out.

No. There is only support for a joystick and while it can work it is just pain.

You can use Steam Controller's ability to emulate mouse and keyboard for moderate success (I know because I played the game through that way) but I would just straight up play with mouse and keyboard for first-time since you'll be shooting small targets while running and strafing.

That's what I thought. Main reason I want to set the game up on my Macbook - my PC is hooked up to the HDTV, playing with M+KB on the couch sucks.

I put the pak5.pak file in my data folder and bumped AF up to 16x, is that the highest texture quality I can expect?

Yes. This is a year 2000 game after all running in upgraded engine from year 1997. Daikatana has some of the best textures out of any idTech 2 engine games since it was engineered to break some of the Quake 2 engine's limits. Problem is that the quality is all over the place which can be attributed to the development hell the game was in.

Please, ignore the shadow maps in this screenshot since when I took it I didn't know how to properly generate them... I converted some of the Unreal Tournament 99's textures into Daikatana's format and it's not too shabby.

And while I don't know what your quality standards are... when I say quality's all over the place consider taking look at these:

I am having a hard time getting the brightness and Intensity settings right... somehow it always looks flatter than your screenshots above. (Currently I am running at 30% Brightness, Intensity 3) Maybe it's subjective.

I am also experiencing some crashes, now that I am a bit further into the game. E2M3C crashes 100% of the time on load. (trying to load it manually doesn't find the map - is it missing?)

Also, how do I disable sidekicks? All Maps play out the same - they get stuck literally meters into a map, I finish the level, then have to backtrack the whole way to the beginning and lead them through by the nose like a bunch of lemmings. If they still show up during cutscenes, I am willing to get rid of them during gameplay, because they honestly don't add anything but problems.

Unfortunately the OS X port has not been updated in over 2 years. Nobody has stepped up to the plate to maintain the port. Years ago, someone ported it OS X for us but he disappeared. Until someone donates a mac to us for development I can't fix it and update it. I'm not interested in a VM for cross-development for OS X. We really need the hardware to make sure it plays through properly.
