Also, make sure you have enough storage. If storage barns and markets are full, produce will be set on the ground. Since the Bannies will only get food from a barn or market they will starve to death even though there is food sitting right in front of them. Usually a mass death begins a few years before where you have mistakenly done something leading to a death spiral. Keep in mind that you NEED 100 units of food per year for each person, including babies and children. This is a bare minimum. It is best to maintain a margin of 300 units of food per person per year. This is something you need to keep on top of throughout the game.
