It's amazing how quickly two people grow to ten. But, micromanaging is very important.
I love the Adam & Eve start - it's the best I've played so far.
It was tough, it requires precise micromanaging. There were a couple of times I wondered if I would make it, but I eventually went from 2 up to over 200 before quitting that particular map. I highly recommend trying the Adam & Eve mod at least once.

The way i do it is to actualy put a gatherers hut right next to the cart. This minimizes the travel time needed to store food to maximize efficiency. I have tried this with fishing huts but I find they dont produce enough food even if your starting location is right on the water. Remember too that right off the bat you are wanting efficiency and that down the road the gatherers hut can be demolished and moved to a better spot. Also gatherers huts will produce food even if not in a forested area (although forested seems better)
Then a 4 X 4 or 5 X 5 stockpile.
Next 1 house. and then a woodcutter.
Yes tools seem like they are impossible to live without and they should be produced as soon as possible. Remember this though, a frozen to death person or starved to death person cannot use a tool. This is why food production a house and a woodcutter take priority over the blacksmith. By the fall of year 2 though you should have one up.
It is essential too that you dont over harvest stone wood and iron off the bat or your people gather way too much of one material and then leave the materials needed to finish constructions for too long. Gather in small areas of say 5 X 5 and let them finish, see what you need and then go on to the next spot. This is where micromanagement comes heavily into play.
Also, one thing to always have in the back of your mind too is how much housing you have. by the 4th year you realy want to have at least 5-6 houses even if this is overkill for your population. You want them to breed as fast as possible immediatly so that people dont get too old and then all the sudden cant breed. Instant game over there.
Playing on impossible difficulty you start with i believe 200 food and thats it. Your people are uneducated and you have no clothes or tools. Using this strategy I have gotten towns up over 200 people multiple times.
Edit : Impossible gives you 2 families though (4 adults) but I find it more difficult without starting withough any educated people or tools. I use the same strategy for both difficulties.
You have to micromanage a lot at first, but after a few years your population has grown and it's like you are just starting a game with some extra buildings and a bit of town history already.
Thats pretty much how i do it as well. Food lasts forever with just a few poeple
"Adam & Eve" March 2014 and no mods then.
Never under rate food. It should come one step behind shelter.
You don't need a food source for quite a while, so you have time to build several other buildings first.
