Nomads instantly add a bunch of people to your population, that's all. I don't accept them unless i'm sure I'm ready to deal with the extra population.

Nomads use boarding houses when there are no homes available. Each boarding house can hand 15 nomads. So if you want the extra people (you are expanding) and do not have room for them immediately OR you are expecting several of your banished to start dying off, it is good to have enough boarding houses to house them in the interm.

Put them to work.

Don't allow nomads early game, you need a hospital, a school, a boarding house and plenty of food.

People, you are not reading. He's asking what to do with NOMADS, not with citizens who used to be NOMADS.

1. Click on the Town Hall.
2. Go to the "Nomads" tab (I think 2nd from the right).
3. Either ALLOW or DENY citizenship for the nomads. If you Allow, they become your citizens and look for accomodation. If you Deny, they leave.

Neither decision will affect when the next group of Nomads asks for citizenship, so if you're not in a good economic situation, it is safer to reject them.

To be safe, you should have at least 500 and better 1000 food for each Nomad (in stock), before you accept the group; enough firewood and clothing is also a big benefit.

Remember that nomads are uneducated & often carry diseases.

They can save you, or be your downfall.
If you're still learning the game, it might be best not to accept them and keep growing at a slow but steady pace...

Ok great, thanks Folks. I have everything but the boarding house. I guess I better build one.

I don't think you really need a boarding house, you could just let them be homeless for a while too.

(purely from a gameplay perspective) I'm not sure what the benefits of a boarding house are compared to homelessness. But if someone wants to enlighten me...

I like to use the boarding house as a temporary holding area for my population for when I want to avoid the dreaded Old Age Die-off, but I don't want to increase the overall population because I'm not ready. If the number of children available in my population is relatively low and I see a house with either:
  • a solitary person
  • a childless elderly couple
  • a number of adults who can have children, but are unable to move out
Select some of those houses for upgrade or demolition and when those people settle into the Boarding House, I would cancel the renovations and see that the new couples are paired off in those recently vacated houses. Sometimes it turns out that once the new couples pair off, there are some citizens who still won't have a house to move into and will live in the Boarding House. Those citizens tend to be in one of the first two categories and will live out the rest of their lives there.
Given the way I play Banished (leapfrogging from area to area), it is helpful at higher populations, harder difficulties, etc. Most certainly others don't need to play it this way, but I have fun!

Just a note on Boarding houses here. Citizens can have children while living in a boarding house if there are males and females of child bearing age and enough room in the house.

I let some nomads join my town and one of the boarding houses wasn't full and they started having kids.

Oh, and a big MUST on having a hospital. I think 3 out of the 4 times I've had diseases pop up in my towns was shortly after allowing nomads in.

Very good point! To add more to your info: citizens can have children in the Boarding House, just slower or fewer of them from what I've seen.

I've certianly used boarding houses to keep my original citizens for awhile if they started in winter. Usually if I accept nomads, I immediately create another food source. It's hard to keep everyone fed.

I only accept them in small groups.

Could have been pregnant before entering the boarding house?

Say what?! :) So, to be safe for 369 nomads, I would need between 184,500 and 369,000 food before allowing them? I don't think I've ever had that much food at one time no matter what the size of my town :)

Don't get me wrong, I have no doubt that 500-1000 food per nomad can be helpful, but, I like a challenge. I've found I like always allowing nomads no matter what my town's conditions are. I've never had a major disaster as a result.

However, my town's tend to be a mess. I sometimes have to build a lot fast and later hate where I've placed buildings :) The river front is crowded. I've had 5-8 trading posts, lots of bridges, etc.. Therefore, if you like orderly towns, I guess you might want to avoid nomads :)

369 nomads with 15,000-16,000 food stored and a Yellow Fever outbreak before they arrive:
