Build slow. Keep production ahead of population. 100 food units per villager per year is needed plus you need at least +10% to build reserves.
The faster you build the faster you need to produce. So the spiral begins.........
Build town hall, use production tab and graphs. Steady incline for population. Spikes and troughs in growth will kill you.

It's a risk management strategy game and is designed to fail if you are "rash" and "reckless" :)
In the map I show above, it took 30+ years to get to 100. Some have even laughed at that - but none of the "laughers" ever got over 1000+ either. Worth thinking about.
