I don't use the mines, too many accidents, waste of space and they use tools up too fast. Just collect the stone & iron resources from the map as you expand, then as you get enough resource in reserve, place a couple trading posts and trade for stone & iron.

Mines and quarries take a lot of workers to see more than a trickle of resources come in. They really start to produce well when all of your miners and stoners are educated and you have at least 10 to 15 in each building. Then when you have even more free laborers you could raise the amount of workers in both the mine and the quarry to 30 people in each, so then when you have 30 educated people in both the mine and the quarry, then the resources really start to come in. With the way that I build, at 30 educated workers in each of them I've usually got to start selling off my iron and stone to get rid of it, but I'm a very slow builder.

In general I try to exploit all the ground ore and stone that is nearby to my main city center, and then eventually build a quarry and or mine when I've got 5 or 10 people free to go work there and just sort of use it to trickle in the resources until I can add more labor to them.

I have around 200 population and i gathered all stone and iron on the map so u deffently need the mines and quarries later on

Mines require investment in labor.

Even then,to fully invest in two quarries and two or three mines full time is a big ask of your population even at 500 plus population.

Quarries/mines are great when you've hit a very high population and have the labor to spare and not much else to do with them.

just my personal opinion. =P

If you focus on producing some tradeble goods in large volume such as coats, steel tools, firewood etc... you can trade for stones as they are only required for building. I do agree that quarries are a pain. Mines are a different issue, they are needed for iron and coal to produce steel tools, warm your houses and some building work. You cannot afford to run out for too long and steel tools is a good trade item.
At the start of your game use what ever available on the ground, then have one mine with as many workers as you can afford. Alternate your production between iron and coal as required until you can afford 2 mines. I have noticed that coal mines produce more than iron ones so balance your workers to production.
Later in your game you can always decide to import your iron and coal as well.

When my population gets to the point where I have 25 or more free laborers I build a mine and a quarry. Once you have these going and foresters going you no longer have to send workers out except for clearing land for expansion. You can actually go make a sandwich without pausing the game because your city carries on without micromanagement.

I don;t mind mines as much, as half their build requires it to be in the mountain, which is otherwise unusavble. Quarries waste landspae, and you cannot get it back..And stone is only used in building, so if you can trade for stone, do it

I use mines and quarries regularly. They don't have an amazing production, but they are fine to fund development and new tools as the years go by. Besides, they are the only source of rock and iron once you've exhausted the resources directly adjacent to your village and if there's no merchant on the foreseeable future.

So keep one of them around, just in case a tornado decides to pop up at the worst moment.

don't use the quarry unless you have cleared all the stone on the map. and don't build stone roads until you build the quarry. You'll need to staff it fully with educated people and have a good supply of labor to replace those killed in accidents. The mine is a different story, you can build one and put a blacksmith next to it and make steel tools by the hundreds. Stay mainly on coal and harvest all the iron on the map, then just switch between the two or build 2 mines. Again, you need alot of labor for this(nomads).

lol, this is great. There are so many different ways to accomplish your goals in this game. Everyone has their own idea of what works and what doesn't and each one of them is right. That's what makes this game great.

I usually build two mines.. one coal and one iron.. and one quarry... staff them with about a third of the labor possible.. seems to work out ok...

given that this game is a great scissor paper rock game, there is really is no right answer . . . however, I might not build as many mines and quarries as I have before as when I have city really large invariably off duty farmers/laborers, find there way cross map to pick up one load of stone or iron and take a season to get home again . . . but the time one is late game with 700+ population one invariably has enough production of a good (food or commodity) that one can trade for stone/iron/coal without seeing much of an impact on ones inventory . . .

with this said however, I stated a new game with building a quarry very early and just across the river from the main part of my town and have been sending my extra works there during off duty time of farms and what not . . . plus they are near some of the farms so the peeps don't have to walk far when they switch jobs during the seasons. . .

the benefit gained that will the trickle of stone coming in the first 30 years, I have been able to consistently build stone house since my first 6 wooden house and three traders, and have done with without having to use surface materials any farther than my existing footprint, thereby leaving those surface materials alone to be save for expansion in those areas, which helps as will have the resources assured plus if one builds a stock pile first, the resource will be kept in that area and store the to be immediately use for building, so no wasted time walking . . .

so bottom line, there is really no right answer and depends on your playing style . . . my early quarry as taken up space near my initial starting stop, but has allow a "free" trickle of stone which has resulted in stone building (thus less firewood used later) and provided traders which allow trading and are used as extra barns (traders can store 30k of goods I think) and lastly have a healthy supply of surface resoruces for future expansion . . . and all only at the expense of a little space . . .

so again pluses and minuses, scissor paper rock . . . how does one roll and that what makes the game tons of fun and many ways to play

The production rate out of the quaries and mines with an uneducated work force is painfully slow. Would be interested in knowing the yield per worker on it.
