its a great help in improving the survival of my little hippie community.

the food production tips helped me a lot, as did holding SHIFT key while placing roads to get a diagonal road (its twice as wide as normal but looks better and is more efficient for your workers than a jagged road

i like to lay out a lot of buildings early and just pause work on all but the few i currently want built. it allows me to plan a better city early in the game.

got any other tips that can stop a noob from being repeatedly kicked in the junk by this unforgiving game every time he/she plays ?

From my own experience, I find planning out your food situation before putting down new houses has made my towns successful. Like If I plan to put down 5 houses, I will make a new pasture, orchid, farm plot, or create new jobs by putting down a gatherers hut or hunting log near a forested area. Sheep are a great way to provide wool and food. A large pasture only requires 2 workers at most and provides over 1000 units of food at full capacity. Fishing is not as successful as other methods to get food. I use fishing huts in early game, but close them down and make the workers do other more profitable things for food.
