Prudest society ever
Imagine living in a world where you have plenty and different things to eat, some nice leather clothes and a relative warm stone-house. Your work at the local farm is hard but satisfying.

Life would be good..... if there was a pub. But there isn't. So you have to do something else in your spare time.....

Since the computer isn't invented your first idea would be of course "hey, lets have fun with my wife(/husband)".

So far so normal. My Banished-citizens on the other hand don't think about procreation. Of course the first generation does, but for some reason their kids don't make own kids while their parents are alive and they live with them. The problem is of course, that the women aren't very fertile once their parents die (btw: why do the old guys reach an age of 80+? my medical service is pretty medieval). This way I droped from 35 to 21 adult citizens.

The obvious solution would be to build more homes, so the kids can move out early. But in the early game it was hard for me to keep the food supply under control and I guess that a population explosion in the early game would make things way more difficult.

So my question is: is there something I do wrong? Is the problem I mentioned above some misinterpretation of the game-concepts on my side? Can I force couples to spend time together and sleep in a single bed?

Actually they do, if you build new houses for them. As for having more children in the "family" house, i dont think this happens, or would you consider procreation with family members?

Ok, I thought that some of the adult childrens lived with their parents-in-law. I didn't monitor who is related to whom ;-) So it's obvious that I need to reach a minimum size in order to have enough young citizens once the old ones die of old age.

Yeah, finding the right pace for expansion is one of the major challenges in this game.
Build too few houses and you population stagnates which will kill you once people die of old age, nuild too many houses and people starve and/or freeze to death...

I've had girls pop out kids since they were 10 years old up to 41. Define "prudest".

Each new couple need to be living in their own house in order to have kids. Two couples cannot share a house and procreate. So all you have to do is build new houses :). Keep in mind, though: once the kids move out, there is nothing to stop them. So don't build too many too fast, or you might have a very sudden shortage of supplies.

General rule I go by: If you continually get a surplus of food each year, build another house. If food goes down, add 1 worker at a time and watch it carefully. Don't expand again until you are certain your making good supplies.

With that, you don't encounter famine, and you expand nicely.

As a general rule of thumb, houses > families = growth. Be careful though, as population will end up growing more than available houses, but just a bit before starting to wilt away again.

The procreation of people in Banished is suppose to be predictable so you can figure out how to strategize.

In medieval times, if you survived past infancy and childhood you had a good shot at living to 80. The reason the average life expectancy was so low back then was because of the severe infant mortality.
